Job overview

Royal Marsden Hospital requires 2 part time Ward Host for Catering department serving food and beverages to private patients, staff and visitors. Experience in similar role preferred.

Main duties of the job

The key roles preparation of raw and cooked food, picking and packing of cook chill food, sandwiches and salad items for patients and restaurant. To undertake cleaning duties which are appropriate with the post and to assist the kitchen team with the patient, and staff meal service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be responsible for their own work including all aspects of the technical work, equipment and quality system.

•    Liaise on a daily basis with the patients and family members regarding meal preferences and appetite, taking into account any cultural and religious choices.
•    Organisation of daily duties to meet the service demands
•    Ensure that patients have filled in their menu selections, helping where necessary.
•    Collating of information off the menu orders and giving this information to the Head Chef and Patient Services Manager, admin team.
•    Assist in picking and packing of cook chill food for patients.
•    Ordering and receiving daily food stocks from the catering stores/kitchen ensuring appropriate stock rotation, and all wastage is kept to a minimum and recorded appropriately.
•    Discuss with the nursing staff Patient treatment plans in order to determine their effect on individual appetite and oral capacity.

Person specification

Specific Experience

Essential criteria
  • A levels, including a science subject
  • A recognised qualification in Maths & English
  • Willing to undergo relevant training
  • Experience of working within catering
  • Experience & knowledge of duties required to support senior staff gained by experience in a similar role
  • Able to understand and follow Standard Operating Procedures
  • Awareness that role involves handling of patient/visitors meals and willingness to be trained in this area
Desirable criteria
  • BSc degree in Biological Science
