Band 6 Specialist Paediatric Occupational therapist

We have an exciting opportunity for an innovative and dedicated Occupational Therapist with skills, knowledge and a minimum of 18 months experience in paediatrics, to be part of a growing team of OTs, supporting children and young people between the ages of 0-18 years
Maybe you have been working in private practice, or your have been involved in research and you now want to work to return or come in to a large diverse team, of OTs from all over the world, in which you can truly make a difference to children and young people who live in the London Borough of Newham.
Come and and work with us and in turn we will provide you with a broad range of clinical experiences to ensure you continue to develop the specialist skills you require to progress your OT career. Experience will be gained in a variety of clinical settings including clinics, schools and client homes. The caseload will be varied and provide opportunity for working with children with physical conditions, DCD, neurodiversity, upper limb splinting, seating and much more!

To work as a skilled autonomous practitioner in managing a complex clinical caseload by applying specialist knowledge and skills to the assessment of the needs of clients referred to the service.
Provide a service that takes into consideration working with children, young people and families from a range of cultural, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds in the context of a multicultural, diverse inner city London Borough.
Using specialist skills and knowledge, to work jointly, with more senior colleagues, to help develop the service to children in Newham, in a range of pathways e.g. Early Years, complex needs and Schools.
To independently manage a large, diverse clinical caseload, liaising with other colleagues in clinic where necessary and reporting directly to the Clinical Lead when required.

Within the Child Development Service, the team work closely with multidisciplinary partners such as Dietitians, Paediatricians, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and Specialist Nurses,

- To screen, assess, develop and implement Specialist OT treatment for clients.
- To write reports reflecting specialist knowledge independently.
- To provide appropriate tailored intervention and evaluate outcomes.
- To provide advice to others regarding the management and care of students with communication difficulties.
- To ensure that students are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible
- To demonstrate negotiation skills.
- To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures. This requires maintaining knowledge of current research and agreed best practice in working in the field of specialism.
- To adapt practice to meet individual students’ circumstances, including due regard for cultural and linguistic differences
- To demonstrate skills in dealing with complex issues to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management.
- To provide a service which takes account of the needs of clients from a range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds
- To consistently manage a large, complex caseload independently.
- To provide information, education and training to parents to enable them to better understand their child’s functional difficulties and enable them to develop their child’s skills.

- Recognised Occupational Therapy Degree/Post graduate degree Qualification or equivalent
- Health Professions Council – Licence to Practice
- Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses
Experience

- Minimum of 18 months at Band 5 level (preferably in a paediatric setting) with evidence of consolidating OT competencies
- Ability to undertake all aspects of the occupational therapy process
- Highly developed skills in relation to a field of specialism visual perception: ability to diagnose specific problems in the field, devise and implement appropriate treatment programmes, and evaluate and modify the programme
Knowledge and Skills

- Ability to train parents/carers to carry out therapeutic interventions including gross and fine motor activities using manual dexterity skills and physical stamina e.g. sensory integration treatments using large equipment.
- Ability to apply safe manual handling techniques to children/young people with highly complex disabilities
- Ability to prioritise own workload taking into account both clinical and non-clinical elements
- Ability to reflect and critically appraise own and others performance
- Excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills
- Negotiation and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrates good analytical and self-reflection skills
