To assist the dietitians by ensuring efficient stock control of dietetic products on the wards and cleaning of special equipment. To provide administrative support to the dietetic team and assistance with clinical tasks. To undertake specific patient measurements and accounts of food intake from patients.

Assists the Dietitian with patient intervention as directed e.g. monitoring food intake, weighing patients, or assistance with menus.
With training and support as required the Dietetic assistant should
1. Assist patients with menus and assisted feeding
2. Monitor and calculate patients food intake using food records and patient interview
3. Ability to explain complex things in simple terms
4. Understand and explain patients feeding plans
5. Undertake patient measurements of weight, height and mid arm circumference
6. Show an interest in science and food and a passion for the subject
7. Present at patient education groups
8. Documents patients’ progress and ongoing needs according to department procedure.
9. Maintains competencies through active participation in in-service training programme.
Policy/service development/implementation
10. Comments on policies / procedures.
11. Contribute to the collection of patient outcome measures
Financial and physical resources
12. Be able to lift, move and stack moderate weight boxes from the store room.
13. Transport smaller items by hand or by trolley to the wards
14. Have understanding of the importance of working within the financial limitations of the NHS
15. Be able to manage periods of standing or walking around a large hospital site.
16. Carry out stock rotation and avoid feed wastage
17. Carry out administrative duties as required such as room bookings, taking minutes, scanning forms and uploading letters.
Human resources
18. Participates in staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and is responsible for complying with agreed personal development plan to meet required knowledge and competencies.
19. Participate in team meeting and journal club
20. Explains own role and outlines Dietetic department procedures as part of staff induction.
Information resources
21. Maintains statistics according to department procedure.
22. Keeps local resource files up to date.
23. Assists in the management and organisation of electronic files
24. Takes, types and shares minutes in a timely manner as requested at Dietetic meetings
Research and development
25. Records data for audits as required.
26. Independently choose articles for discussion at journal club
27. Contributes to meetings about service improvement
28. Assists in the education of the multi-disciplinary team
Freedom to act
29. All patient related activity is carried out at the request of a Dietitian.
30. Works within patients’ agreed goals.
31. Refers new patient queries to the Dietitian.
32. Discusses with the Dietitian if patient’s needs have changed or if uncertain about treatment plan.
33. Maintains responsibility for own time management to meet priorities.
Nutrition and Dietetics Department
34. Keep sufficient stocks of nutritional supplements on the wards, re-issue when stock run out, order electronically and put away new stocks.
35. To arrange appointments for patients as requested by the dietitian.
36. To complete the paper work required, preparing dietetics department records for clinician use.
37. To deal with telephone enquiries, forwarding calls to the correct extensions or taking accurate messages, ensuring they get passed on.
38. Work closely with the catering department when requested by the Dietitians.
39. File away patients’ record, retrieve patients’ electronic and paper records as required, keeping filing system up to date.
40. Ordering and keeping stock of office requirements (diet leaflets etc.)
41. To work closely with the dietitians on project work and audit as requested.
42. To review patients designated by the Dietitians on a weekly basis and complete the staff handover and statistics in a timely manner.
