A vacancy has arisen for a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry to  join our CNWL Buckinghamshire Priority Dental service (BPDS).

This is an exciting opportunity for someone to apply their specialist dental knowledge and skills in the provision of comprehensive oral care for children with complex special needs, including treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia.

Duties will include the provision of high quality dental care for special care patients referred to the service

Working within a large and supportive dental team, the post holder will provide clinical leadership in paediatric dentistry as well as support to, and training and mentoring of staff. They will contribute to the strategic direction of the service.

Main duties of the job

The Dental Specialist will provide dental care to priority groups using multiple modalities including inhalation, intravenous, intranasal and oral sedation, treatment under general anaesthetic, domiciliary care, provision of screening and epidemiology and oral health care to those in local secure settings.

The post holder will provide advanced clinical care to children in line with the defined complexity levels 1, 2 and 3a as detailed in the Commissioning Standards for Dental Specialities – Paediatric 
Dentistry.

This will include sedation and general anaesthesia, domiciliary care, provision of oral health care to those in local secure settings, screening and epidemiology and oral health promotion.


The post holder will be responsible to the Clinical Director and will assist them as required in the day to day operational activities of the Community Dental Service. They will be expected to take the lead 
on the delivery of care to paediatric patients and will need to travel between sites as required.

The post holder will be involved in the development, line management, training and supervision of 
dentists.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·      To manage and lead the service in providing efficient and effective for patients who meet the service acceptance criteria.

To provide appropriate triage of referrals and communication to referral practitioners.

To provide high quality preventive and treatment oral care services for children who are unable to accept routine dental care because of some physical, developmental, medical, emotional, sensory, mental or social impairment, or a combination of these factors according to the criteria and protocols relevant to the specialty of Paediatric dentistry.

To provide high quality specialist paediatric oral healthcare including treatment under local anaesthetic, sedation and general anaesthesia as required.

To understand and demonstrate all aspects of pain and anxiety management particularly for anxious children.

 To provide specialist oral health care for patients in a variety of settings, including clinics, hospitals, domiciliary settings etc.

To support any necessary further developments in paediatric sedation (including development of advanced sedation) and behavioural management within BPDS for patients who cannot accept treatment any other way.

To support other clinicians within the service in providing paediatric dentistry, including accepting referrals that meet referral acceptance criteria, assisting in treatment planning and provision of dental care.

To keep comprehensive records in accordance with the competencies identified for a specialist in Paediatric dentistry.

To be responsible for the clinical leadership and clinical quality assurance of Paediatric Dentistry provided by the service. This role will be carried out within the context of the Directorate’s clinical governance system, working in conjunction with the Clinical Director.

To take a clinical leadership role in developing specialist Paediatric dental services within the service, including providing strategic advice to the Clinical Director.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)
  • Full registration with General Dental Council (GDC)
  • NHS Performer number
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification
  • On GDC specialist list for paediatric dentistry
  • Management qualification

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable knowledge of cross infection control standards
  • Experience of staff management
  • Good IT skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current or recent experience working as a Paediatric specialist with clinical commitment in hospital, salaried or general dental service
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care under general anaesthesia
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care under Intravenous/intranasal sedation
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care under inhalation sedation
  • Experience of assisting with provision of care on a domiciliary basis
  • Can demonstrate competencies in paediatric dentistry to a very high standard
  • Recent experience in treating children with complex medical problems
  • Evidence of recent clinical experience for at least 5 years in area of paediatric/special care dentistry
