Job overview

To provide specialist behavioural assessment, formulation and intervention to clients of the Intensive Community Support Team (ICST) across all sectors of care. To work with professional colleagues to provide holistic assessment of complex service user needs. To provide advice on service design and individual clients needs to statutory and voluntary service providers. To provide training on behavioural approaches to staff, carers and other professionals and relevant others. To provide supervision to support staff and to participate in the training of psychologists / behaviour specialists and relevant others.  To provide expertise on the safe management and prevention of challenging behaviour including appropriate physical interventions. To undertake research and audit, for policy and service development within the area served by the team/service.

 NB Although the postholder will initially be based in the Bromley CLDT, they will work with service users in Oxleas Learning Disability Sub-Directorate, who may originate from Bexley or Greenwich. The post holder may therefore be based within either the boroughs of Bexley or Greenwich, or both. This may need to be varied in discussion with manager.

Main duties of the job

1.    To provide specialist behavioural assessments of clients referred to the ICST usually based on applied behavioural analysis. This involves the appropriate use, interpretation, and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care. 

2.    To formulate and implement plans for the appropriate treatment, intervention and/or management of a client’s emotional, behavioural, and developmental problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client’s problems, and employing ethical methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of team and care settings and across agency boundaries. 

3.    Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options taking into account highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the challenges experienced by the individual, family, group or service. 

4.    To facilitate / participate in psychological therapy groups as identified by service need. 

5.    To be responsible for the assessment, treatment, intervention and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically/behaviourally-based standard care plans. 

6.    To produce and facilitate the production of challenging behaviour guidelines, behavioural management plans and risk assessments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 1.    To communicate effectively with clients, carers, day centre staff and work colleagues with and without learning disabilities using appropriate methods, for example speech, writing, sign language, symbols, photos and objects of reference wherever necessary. 

2.    To provide specialist behavioural advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients’ formulation, diagnosis, and treatment plan. 

3.    To contribute directly and indirectly to the psychological/behavioural understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings and agencies serving the client group. 

4.    To undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and to provide advice to other professionals on psychological/behavioural aspects of risk assessment and risk management for the individual and their environment. 

5.    To act as care coordinator, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of care plans, including enhanced CPA, including clients, their carers, referring agents and others involved the network of care. 

6.    To communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment/intervention plans of clients under their care and to monitor progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary and multi-agency care.

Person specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Bachelor’s Degree followed by PG Diploma in Applied Behaviour Analysis, or Analysis and Intervention in Intellectual Disabilities, or equivalent PG Diploma, including PBS qualifications.
Desirable criteria
  • A formal management qualification e.g., CMS or NVQ level 4 in management.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of specialist behavioural/psychological assessment and treatment of clients, including conducting PBS assessment and writing PBS plans.
  • Experience of working with adults with learning disabilities, some of whom will have challenging behaviour, across the adult life span, with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision
  • Experience of running psychological therapy groups

Skills/Abilities/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of behavioural/psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.
  • Skills in analysis and intervention with people with learning disabilities, and their application in services
  • Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • An ability to interact effectively with people with learning disabilities.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to adults with learning disabilities, particularly those with challenging behaviour
  • An ability to interact effectively with people with mental health difficulties.
