Job overview

This is a 10 PA post for a Consultant Urologist for Core Urology/Stone services at BHR University Hospitals. The post will be based at our new BHRUT Elective Surgical Hub at King George and Queens Hospital cross-site working.

The successful applicant will be expected to complement the current workforce working closely with colleagues and managers with the aim of decreasing the waiting list for core urology/stones.   They will support the current delivery of core urology/stone services.

The aim of the Trust’s Surgical Division is to become a world leader in the field of surgical management through innovation, evidence based safe and effective patient care and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.

The unit is dynamic and undergoing significant change and improvement with scope for further input and contribution.  We have a fast-developing stone service with a new 100W Holmium Laser and currently perform more that 500-day case laser ureteroscopies and 40-50 Percutaneous Nephrolithotomies (PCNL’s) with a median post operative length of stay of one day.  The stone unit carries out standard, mini and ultra mini PCNL/General Urology service priorities are to further consolidate cancer services which have recently been centralised at UCLH and The Royal Free Hospital, and to improve the efficiency and quality of diagnostic and emergency care pathways.

Main duties of the job

Barking Havering and Redbridge University Trust is seeking to appoint a suitably trained individual to provide emergency and elective surgery, special interest in stone disease.  The post holder would be expected to complement the current workforce in working to clear the backlog of core urology patients.  The elective sessions are undertaken at our King George Hospital site and emergency work at Queens Hospital.  The consultant would be expected to participate in the provision of acute and elective core/general urology services to the Northeast London and Essex catchment area.  This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which Clinicians are the forefront of managing patient care.

The new appointee will be joining a group of 12 consultants as well as 1 Associate Specialist, 2 Specialty Doctor, 5 senior clinical fellows, 3 Registrars, and 10 Junior clinical fellows. There is also a specialty doctor with cross site and teaching commitments. There are 7 Nurse Specialists based at King George Hospital.

A regular programme of service and educational meetings underpins the service. There is a regular commitment to audit and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The scale of the hospital permits an excellent degree of effective working relationships between hospital departments and Primary care.

There are regular MDT meetings on site at King George Hospital.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.

Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to work closely with colleagues and managers with the aim of developing pathways ensuring smooth and efficient pathways for our patients.
