Job overview

The Trust seeks to appoint a Locum Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Neurosurgical Anaesthesia. This is a whole-time position, and the new appointee will share the caseload, facilities, and trainee grade support with the existing consultants. While the main intention of this position is to meet the requirements of Neurosurgical theatre there is the potential for the successful candidate to utilise the flexible theatre element of the rota to undertake Neuro IR theatre lists which does include a thrombectomy service all of which can be explored further at interview.

The post is whole time post of 10pa’s and offers 8.5 programmed activities (PAs), and 1.5 SPA.

The successful candidate will be expected to provide pre-operative assessment, anaesthesia, and follow-up. He/she will be expected to introduce and apply new techniques as appropriate and to take a share of the general work of the department, including cover for consultant colleagues where practical.

Main duties of the job

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals. The appointee will take his/her share of clinical responsibilities within the Department of anaesthesia. This will include provision for perioperative assessment. In addition to duties within subspeciality, the appointee will be required to provide anaesthesia for adult patients in all specialties as appropriate to his/her training and experience.

Develop a team with a strong emphasis on delivering a cross-site service. Post-holders will be required to work on each site and comply with their agreed job plan, which is reviewed annually.

As a Consultant at BHRUT the post involves prospective on-call duties which attracts 1.25Pas with a

5% uplift due to frequency of 1:10 with planned weekends which will include provision for adults as well as neonatal to teenage patients. The on-call is run in tandem with a second consultant due to the 2 hospital sites and the on-call rota stipulates which site you cover on each date across the year.

Please see the attached detailed Job Description and Person Specification for more information.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.

Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
