Job overview
We are looking to recruit an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist to work within our friendly Wheelchair Service which is supported by a well-established User Group. We are a team of 16 Occupational/Physiotherapists (Bands 6/7/8), Rehabilitation Engineers and administrative staff. The team structure offers opportunities for career progression for therapists working in the Service.
We are looking for a candidate who:
- Has HCPC registration and knowledge of postural management and seating theory.
- Has post-qualification experience of rehabilitation in the community or hospital setting
- Has an interest in working with people of all ages presenting with multiple mobility challenges and seating needs.
- Has excellent communication skills, initiative and self-motivation.
- Is adaptable, dynamic and has leadership skills to support Band 6 and
administrative staff - Has excellent time management skills.
- Has a willingness to participate in audit, professional and service
development. - Has strong teamwork skills.
Main duties of the job
You will assess and prescribe wheelchairs, buggies and accessories to the clients of all ages in their own homes, other environments in the community, e.g. special schools, day centres and at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.
You will have excellent clinical and professional skills including knowledge of postural management and seating. You will be assessing for all wheelchair needs including lightweight and powered chairs and will work with the in-house Special Seating Team and Rehabilitation Engineers.
The Wheelchair Service is commissioned by 5 CCG’s across South West London and is responsible for approximately 8,500 clients.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- HPCP registration to practice as Occupational Therapist and/ or Physiotherapist
- Evidence of CPD relevant to this role
Desirable criteria
- Attended Practice Educators’ Course
- CPD, including posture and position and pressure care
- Member of a specialist interest group relevant for this role
- Diploma/BSc/Post Graduate Diploma/MSc
Experience
Essential criteria
- Post qualification experience in senior therapy role in any of the following areas elderly, neurology, rheumatology, general medicine, elderly mentally ill, or community work.
- Experience of supervising and performance management of junior members of staff, incl supervising students/appraisal/performance reviews
- Experience of monitoring, audit and evaluation
- Experience of managing change
- Experience in senior role of working in wheelchair services
Desirable criteria
- Experience of facilitating groups
- Experience of working with wheelchair services
- Experience in budget control
Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to deliver a quality service to people from different backgrounds by including and embracing their varied needs.

- Comprehensive knowledge of wheelchair prescription and seating theory, mobility equipment & seating accessories.
- Knowledge of relevant policies and guidelines e.g. NSF's, NICE guidelines
- Knowledge of current Professional issues
Desirable criteria
- Appreciation of changes in healthcare provision
- Understanding of community issues & services available.
- Knowledge of the use of outcome measures
Other
Essential criteria
- Confident in relating to a diversity of people and situation
- Car owner/driver/ access to own transport
- Physically fit and able to move and handle wheelchairs and seating equipment
