Consultant Neuropsychiatrist

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the regional specialist care provider for south west London, Surrey and beyond. The trust provides a high quality, comprehensive range of health services from leading edge tertiary and trauma care to community services.

With national and regional referrals added to our local 3.5m catchment, we serve a population of around 5m.

Co-located with St George’s, University of London and with both organisations now in a formal strategic alliance with King’s Health Partners, the trust delivers with its partners high quality research and education both of which contribute to the healthcare provision of tomorrow.

Acute and tertiary health services are delivered from over 1,000 beds across two sites, by around 8,000 staff.

St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute hospital that offers very specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, cardiac care, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. It has a helipad which opened in spring 2014 and the work of its emergency department can currently be seen on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’ programme. The hospital also provides all the usual care you would expect from a local NHS district general hospital.

We also provide services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. These include outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, a minor injuries unit, limb fitting services and 70 elderly, intermediate care and rehabilitation beds.

As well as hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist, maternity and community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from St John’s Therapy Centre, 11 health centres and clinics, schools, nursing homes and people’s own homes. The trust also manages the healthcare service at HMP Wandsworth.

Job overview

The post holder will primarily be in the role of assessing new patients who have been referred for specialist neurorehabilitation under The Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Service.  The post will include providing neuropsychiatric input to the multidisciplinary teams at the Wolfson. The postholder will have outpatient follow up clinics which are usually carried out remotely by telephone or videocall.

The Queen Mary’s Hospital inpatient caseload comprises of patients who are admitted for high intensity rehabilitation (level 1 or level 2), who have complex needs. Patients admitted for rehabilitation will usually comprise those with neurological symptoms secondary to acquired brain injury (ABI) (including stroke, inflammation, and trauma) and functional neurological disorder (FND).

Main duties of the job

The ward is split into 3 teams: Green team (neuropsychiatry led): Level 1 patients presenting with ABI or FND, Yellow Team (neurology led): Level 1 patients presenting with ABI, Blue team (neurorehabilitation led): Level 2 patients presenting with ABI, spinal or peripheral neuropathies.  Each team has a consultant lead and junior doctor; but a culture of flexibility and co-working is promoted.

The v.FND team is a fully digital multidisciplinary service providing treatment for FND. This usually has a caseload of 3-4 patients at any given time.

The post holder will have continuing responsibility for patients in their care on the ward. They will liaise with other relevant professionals within the multidisciplinary team and participate in planning the rehabilitation programme of patients. The post holder will take an active part in the activities of the department, case conferences, team meetings, and to represent the medical component of the team.

Working for our organisation

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest healthcare units in the United Kingdom accommodating around 1170 beds and treating around 89,000 inpatient and day cases, and over 448,000 outpatients annually.  The Trust employs over 6,000 staff incorporating 1,100 Medical & Dental Staff.  It provides general acute services together with specialty services including neurosciences, cardiothoracic, and specialist children’s services.

St George’s Hospital is the main teaching hospital in the western sector of the South Thames, and as such has developed links with most district general hospitals throughout South Thames West, and supports a significant training programme for junior doctors who rotate through the Trust.

The Trust is on three sites, St George’s Hospital, the base for acute general medicine and surgical services, Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton (QMR), and St John’s Therapy Centre, Battersea, where services for care of elderly patients previously at Bolingbroke Hospital are now based.  The Trust serves a resident population of about 300,000 and serves two local Primary Care Trusts, Wandsworth and Sutton & Merton which have a total population of approximately 600,000 between them.
