Job overview

The Estates, Engineering and Facilities (EEF) Department is responsible for the engineering function comprising maintenance, validation, and calibration of assets, as well as repairs and capital work. Adopting the guiding principles of engineering excellence, EEF strive to contain and control risks associated with assets, infrastructure, and critical equipment on the estate. 

EEF manages and controls the Principal Maintenance Contractor (PMC) in the delivery of operations and maintenance to optimise asset value and contribute to EEF’s strategic objectives.

EEF engages with the site stakeholders over current and future engineering requirements to ensure the engineering function supports the needs of the business. The function embraces all engineering aspects from the supply of utilities, provision of environmental conditions to meet the regulatory/compliant (HSE, MHRA, FDA, DEFRA, Home Office and needs of external customers) for high containment and general research laboratories, pharmaceutical production facilities, cell culture storage facilities and general offices, through to minor/major servicing, validation, calibration, and the installation of specialised laboratory/process equipment.


We are now recruiting for a Senior Compliance Technician role within a small team dedicated to carry out performance integrity testing and validation of microbiological high containment facilities and equipment in accordance with safety, regulatory and UKHSA requirements. 

Main duties of the job

  • Supporting the line manager in assigning the day-to-day tasks within the team and deputise when required.
  • To carry out site wide routine integrity performance testing on UKHSA’s Safety and GxP related facilities and equipment which include includes the testing of High Efficiency Particle Air filters (HEPA), Microbiological safety cabinets, Building fabric and air sealability of CL3 and 4 containment Laboratories.
  • To fault find and repair Microbiological safety cabinets.
  • To carry out the preparation and review of technical reports for facilities and equipment as necessary. 
  • To carry out compliance testing and execution of validation protocols in accordance with safety and UKHSA codes of practice.
  • To ensure test data is accurately recorded and records maintained and to provide oral and written reports on activities when required. 
  • To liaise with Lab users and engineering support to ensure user and testing requirements are met, and to witness testing and validation activities of sub-contracted staff.
  • To advise lab users and apply innovative solutions to achieve UKHSA’s business needs, deadlines and targets and attend Factory Acceptance Tests for new equipment if required.
  • In line with any other responsibilities, to perform any tasks assigned or objectives set by the Line Manager.

  • Experience in a scientific or technical field.
  • BTEC or equivalent in a science and/or engineering subject and substantial relevant experience.
  • Testing of laboratory equipment.
  • Computer literate.
  • Accurate and clear record keeping skills.
  • Good numeracy skills.
  • Ability to follow established written procedures.
  • Able to work as part of a team and able to work alone.  
  • Must be able to carry equipment up to regulated weights.  
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships.
