Job overview

King’s College Hospital are looking for a replacement Assistant Services Manager for the Mortuary and Bereavement Department at the Princess Royal University Hospital site.  The mortuary look after all hospital deaths with Princess Royal and Orpington hospital as well as community deaths on behalf of Coroner for Bromley and Bexley.

The post holder will oversee and undertake a broad range of routine and specialist activities, ensuring the provision of a high quality and responsive service, meeting both regulatory and accreditation requirements specifically HTA.

The post holder will participate in all aspects of the department including bereavement services, on call, audits, quality management, SOP’s, training, appraisals, and health and safety.

The post holder will assist the mortuary and bereavement services manager in the continuous improvement of service delivery and quality within all areas of mortuary and bereavement services at Denmark Hill.

Main duties of the job

To deputise for the mortuary and bereavement services manager in the day to day running of Kings NHS Foundation Trust mortuary and bereavement services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 To deputise for the Mortuary and Bereavement Service Manager

  • Organisation and participate in routine and specialised post mortem provision ensuring HTA and UKAS compliance at all times.
  • Organisation and participation in all other aspects of mortuary and bereavement services ensuring the effective, professional, cost effective service.
  • Overseeing the day to day running of the mortuary and bereavement office.
  • To manage the bereavement supervisor and ensure the smooth running of the service in accordance with KCH guidelines and recommendations.
  • Liaison with external agencies including the Coroner’s office, Police, GP’s, Treasury Solicitors, councils and financial institutions.
  • Ensure efficient and professional liaison with clinical, nursing and clerical staff and all other Trust staff
  • To work with the Service Manager in ensuring that all SOPs, risk assessments and audits are undertaken and updated as in line with departmental, Trust and HTA policies.

Management and Leadership  

  • The post holder will support the service manager in ensuring that the mortuary and bereavement service delivers a quality and responsive service to Kings NHS Foundation Trust and associated stakeholders and partners.

Staff Management 

  • Responsible in conjunction with the service manager for senior APTs, APT, trainees and bereavement staff within the mortuary and bereavement services.
  • Set objectives and review performance of staff, identifying individual training and development needs and promote continued personal and professional development.
  • Assist the service manager to manage sickness, disciplinary and performance issues in line with Trust policies.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant Trust policies and standing financial instructions.
  • Ensure effective workplace planning, anticipate staff shortages and take action to minimise the impact of these on service delivery.

Person specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant scientific subject or extensive experience in working in a mortuary setting
  • RSPH Diploma and Certificate in Anatomical Pathology Technology Level 4 qualifications or will achieve this within 6 months of starting post
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development
  • Excellent numeracy, literacy and IT skills
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification
  • Management experience

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial skills in routine and specialised post mortems
  • Excellent knowledge of clinical governance, HTA and Health & Safety legislation
  • Knowledge of Bereavement services
  • Anatomical and Forensic knowledge
  • Extensive experience of working a busy mortuary
  • Experience of working with bereavement services
  • Extensive experience of complying with HTA regulations, Codes of Practice and inspections

  • Training and teaching skills

Skills and Competencies

  • Full participation in the mortuary on call rota
  • Ability to be able to work whilst being frequently interrupted
  • Be able to deal with the physical and emotional aspect of work in mortuary and bereavement services
  • Involvement in change management to develop more innovative ways of working to improve service delivery
