The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi–disciplinary team providing and further developing care for surgery patients and to provide and develop services for King’s surgical patients. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support General Surgery with on-call commitment supporting Emergency care, ITU, wards as well as supporting the management of the elective service.

The post holder will be expected to contribute and participate in the department’s ongoing clinical audit programme, and will carry out all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with this post.

To observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.

To observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff. To be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the development of colleagues.

The post holder has an important responsibility for and contribution to make to infection control and must be familiar with the infection control and hygiene requirements of this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The General Surgery service at King’s College NHS Foundation Trust is a single Trust service and, though it is envisaged that the post will primarily be based at the Princess Royal University Hospital site near Bromley, attendance at other sites including King’s College Hospital may be required.


SPECIFIC AREAS
Inpatients
General Surgery has it’s own dedicated ward space at the Princess Royal University
Hospital in support of a busy elective schedule and a busy 24 hour Emergency Department.


Theatres
General Surgery has an average of fourteen elective main theatre sessions per week as well as a daily emergency list. In addition, General Surgery has an average of five day theatre sessions per week.


Clinics
General Surgery has a busy outpatient clinic schedule. Most clinics are based at the Princess Royal University Hospital site but clinics are also held in a small number of local satellite locations.


MDT
General Surgery has a Trust-wide single colorectal cancer multidisciplinaery team with a weekly MDM at the King’s College Hospital site in Camberwell.


CLINICAL ORGANISATION
General Surgery is part of the Liver, Renal and Surgery division of King’s College NHS Foundation Trust.
Though a single Trust-wide service, a clinical team of over forty is based primarily at the Princess Royal University Hospital site. The team is led by eight consultants with a wider team of Speciality Doctors, SpRs, Junior and Clinical Fellows and FY1 and FY2 trainees.


AUDIT AND ADMINISTRATION
The post holder will be expected to contribute and participate in the department’s ongoing clinical audit programme, and will carry out all necessary administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for registration with the GMC
Desirable criteria
  • ALS (or equivalent) within 2 years
  • MRCS or equivalent

Audit and Research

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation and active involvement in an audit project
Desirable criteria
  • Previous involvement in research project(s)

Training and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Core trainee experience, or equivalent in General Surgery
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
