This post is based at Princess Royal University Hospital and South Sites 

HOURS: 10 PA’s

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialty Doctor Grade position based within the Endoscopy Department at PRUH site. Applications welcomed from both Gastroenterology and Surgery candidates who are JAG accredited in diagnostic endoscopy. 

Opportunities will be available for further training in ERCP / therapeutic endoscopy (EMR, Stenting) within the Endoscopy Department. Successful candidate will be expected to provide diagnostic endoscopy lists within the department and it is envisaged that there will be at least 6 service lists per week, 2 ERCP training lists and 1: 4 weekend lists. There are no on call commitments for this post, but there will ample opportunity to train in endoscopic management of GI bleeds and other therapeutic procedures. The Endoscopy Unit is based at the PRUH. It has two rooms which run seven days a week, two session days. ERCPs are carried out within our Radiology Department. We have a demand of over 14,000 referrals per year. We carry out approx. 450 ERCPs/stenting per year. The PRUH has very busy GI HPB cancer and colorectal service.

Main duties of the job

There will be an average of 8 Programmed Activities including Direct Clinical Care and Supporting Professional and/or other Activities – work 4 days / week . There are no on call commitments, but the appointee is expected to cover Endoscopy lists at 1: 4 weekends ( sat and Sunday lists ) as part of job plan.

 - Perform diagnostic endoscopy procedures 

Together with other colleagues, to provide a high quality care service to patients.  This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.

-   Training in ERCP/ Therapeutic Endoscopy – 1-2 ERCP/ Therapeutic lists/ week

-  Backfill mixed lists of OGD and colonoscopy to cover for GOTM/ annual leave 

-    Minimum of 5-6 service lists/ week (diagnostic OGD/ Colonoscopy) –depending on service needs

- 1 clinic- Gastroenterology or Surgery ( depending of candidates primary training)

-      Weekend endoscopy sessions- 1: 4 weekends (Saturday and Sunday )

-     Vetting of endoscopy referrals as per local and national guidelines

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

- Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis.  Responsible also for covering colleagues’ periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in your contract.-

Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.

 Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.

 Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group’s management team where part of the service structure.

-   Contribute to the Care Group’s research interests in accordance with the Trust’s R&D framework

- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.- 

- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Group’s Business Plan.  This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.-

-   Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s).
