Job overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with relevant post-qualification experience of working in Community Mental Health Teams to undertake a leadership role in the community transformation model. There post holder would be working with service managers, psychological therapies workforce and primary care networks as well as local community organisations and people participation leads to take forward the vision for transformation of psychological therapies within community settings. Excellent interpersonal skills would be required and a capacity to inspire and lead others whilst holding organisation stress for yourself and colleagues. 

Main duties of the job

1. Teaching, training, consultation and supervising others within the discipline and members of other disciplines on psychological theory and interventions related to a range of complex psychological presentations.

2. Provision of expert assessment and treatment for complex psychological presentations alongside the provision of support to clinical teams for individual care planning.

3. Participate in the development and implementation of the borough’s plans for integrated psychological therapies.

4. Work with senior colleagues to implement principles of transformation for psychological therapies.

5. Work effectively with colleagues across NHS and in VSCE to improve the experience of psychological input.

6. Develop excellent partnerships with service user leads and embed principles of co-production within the psychological offer.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role requires a skilled clinician who can work both directly as well as indirectly to provide a range of clinical services and to manage and support psychology staff including CAPS, CAP trainees and other psychological therapists. You should have experience of working with service users with complex mental health including dual diagnosis and/or ASD presentations. Additionally, you will be familiar with the needs of the diverse BAME community of Newham and challenges of working in areas of high socioeconomic deprivation

You would be joining a wider psychological therapies service within Newham which offers a variety of specialist services. You will have access to professional management support from the Consultant Lead for Psychological Therapies, and operational management support from a Senior Manager in community services.

Education/Qualification/Training

Essential criteria
  • Current Registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council Professional qualification in Clinical/ Counselling Psychology or equivalent post graduate qualification Further training in supervision of psychological therapies
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant further specialist training in one or more therapy modalities. Accreditation as a Supervisor for Psychology and/or Psychotherapy Training in evidence-based psychological treatments for complex PTSD including EMDR, Narrative Exposure Therapy and Trauma Focused CBT Leadership/management training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as a qualified Psychological Therapist (or equivalent as above) including substantial post-qualification experience within Adult Mental Health. Experience of specialist psychological/ psychotherapeutic assessments and treatments for service users with severe, enduring and complex presentations including dual diagnoses, ASD presentations and other neurodiversity. Experience of providing teaching, training and clinical supervision for interventions and treatments for a range of psychological presentations Experience of supervising CAPS Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of patients across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care and inpatient. Experience of developing and delivering therapeutic interventions in various formats, including individual and group. Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups across the whole life course and presenting problems which reflect the full range of clinical severity. Experience of supervising qualified Psychologists and/or psychotherapists and other staff working in mental health settings. Experience of multidisciplinary team working. Experience of the application of psychological therapy in different cultural contexts. Experience of work in a multi-cultural setting, including working with interpreters.

Knowledge and Skill

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management including the use of theoretical models to analyse information and to develop formulations upon which to base choice of treatment with particular reference to Adult Mental Health. Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in relation to psychological trauma presentations, including complex PTSD. Well-developed skills in the effective communication of highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to a wide variety of recipients in a range of settings within and outside the NHS, including the ability to produce comprehensive and coherent letters, reports and associated documentation. Ability to interpret, report and respond to performance and outcome data at all levels of the Trust. Highly developed communication skills aimed at overcoming barriers to understanding and acceptance. Skills in working in multidisciplinary settings. Skills in providing advice and consultation to other professional and non-professional groups. Working knowledge of the practices and approaches of other key disciplines, professions and agencies involved in the care and management network, including medical, employment, social, educational and criminal justice systems. High level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practised within the clinical fields of psychology. Evidence of CPD as recommended by the relevant regulatory body. Ability to plan, organise and prioritise own and others’ work. Ability to record, monitor and report on clinical information as required. Competence in advanced IT systems including research and data-management skills. Awareness of potential impact of discrimination and disadvantage on mental health. High-level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies including CBT. Knowledge of principles of NHS transformation Ability to provide a culturally-competent and non-stigmatising service.

  • Knowledge of local communities in Newham Ability to speak an additional local language (Urdu/Bengali/Hindi/Farsi/Somali etc)
