Job overview

We are looking for a Healthcare Scientist Practitioner (HSP) to work within the UKHSA Vaccine Evaluation Unit (VEU). The post-holder will provide scientific services to patients and clients as an aid in the evaluation of immunological responses to vaccines and microbiological disease. 

The role will be based in the laboratory and involves the preparation of samples (serum) and reagents for use in immunoassays and performing specialist immunoassays.

The successful applicant will possess an appropriate biological degree and have already had some appropriate laboratory experience. We are looking for an individual who can work well as part of a team and who has good communication/keyboard skills. 

Main duties of the job

  • To ensure data integrity when entering demographics and results into the laboratory information system
  • Sample preparation, processing bodily fluids and materials, including high-risk specimens and reagent preparation following protocols
  • To refer unusual or unfamiliar events to senior technical staff for action or advice.
  • To use, maintain and calibrate manual and complex automated equipment for the performance of specialist assays
  • To prepare reagents for use in specialist in-house immunoassays
  • To monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels and facilitate deliveries
  • To be responsible for organising own daily work schedule
  • To participate in and monitor Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities and assist the unit in maintaining UKAS ISO 15189 and GCLP (Good Clinical Laboratory Practice) compliance
  • To attend regular Unit meetings and contribute to effective communication within the Unit
  • To ensure that personal work activity is managed to make effective use of time and maintain an adequate supply of laboratory consumables
  • To undertake on-going training and development and update Professional Development Plan
  • To undertake the training, supervision and monitoring of Senior Assistant Healthcare Scientists, Healthcare Scientist Practitioners and students 
  • To work in a safe manner in accordance with Laboratory Health and Safety policies and procedures

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Selection Process Details: 

This vacancy will be assessed using a competency-based framework which will assess your Qualifications, knowledge and experience and / or skills and abilities outlined in the essential criteria.  

Stage 1: Application & Sift:

Competency-based assessment

You will be required to complete an application form. You will be assessed on the essential and desirable criteria , and this will be in the form of a:  

  • Application form (Employer/ Activity history’ section on the application) 

  • 1500 word Statement of Suitability.  

This should outline how your skills, experience, and knowledge, provide evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential and desirable criteria.  

The Application form and Statement of Suitability will be marked together.

Shortlisting:

If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to interview and assessment  

Please do not exceed 1500 words.  We will not consider any words over and above this number. 

Feedback will not be provided at this stage. 

Stage 2: Interview (competency based)

You will be invited to a (single) face to face interview.

Knowledge, experience, skills & abilities will be tested at interview  

There will be a Technical Test (at time of interview).

Location  

This role is based onsite at the Manchester Royal Infirmary, Oxford Rd, Manchester M13 9WL. Please note that hybrid working is not available for this role. 

Security Clearance Level Requirement 

Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check.

Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed is Basic Personnel Security Standard.
