Job overview

The post holder will provide technical leadership and advice to the team. You will lead on and develop Surveillance methods , this will include engaging with key stakeholders to ensure methods are up to date and leading small multidisciplinary teams. You will provide advice and resolution on highly complex issues and where appropriate support the response to feedback received from public consultation on methodological and technical aspects of our draft outputs. You will lead on the quality assurance (QA) of outputs and training and development for the technical analysts within the team. 

Main duties of the job

The Surveillance Team is responsible for the ongoing surveillance programme for published guidelines. This includes reviewing new evidence on a regular basis, for producing published Surveillance reports, and for recommending whether guidance should be updated. The team also supports the Clinical Directorate in topic prioritisation 

  • Provide critical comments on work carried out by other staff in NICE or external organisations, as required
  • Undertake highly complex QA across guidance products.
  • Provide advice/guidance which contributes to the care of patients/clients/service users.
  • Advise and support technical teams develope guidance to define the parameters of the required work and how to manage the methodological and technical aspects of their work.
  • Liaise and influence guidance teams to prioritise/reprioritise their own workload and balancing the workload of the technical team at different stages of surveillance and topic prioritisation, and maintaining cross-team management systems.
  • Contribute to strategy and policy planning for the Surveillance team’s work programme, and leading on the delivery of at least one theme of work
  • Contribute to the production of highly complex and technical scientific guideline products for specialist area of work, including analysis and synthesis of research evidence
  • Contribute to NICE’s Research and Development programme and participating in international research collaborations.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent level of knowledge in subjects with relevance to evidence-based decision-making (e.g. economics, public health, health psychology, mathematics, operational research, data science) or equivalent level of knowledge acquired through experience and further training/development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in and contributing to at least one area of guidance or policy development: o Surveillance o Health research and assessment o Systematic review methodology o Quality improvement methods o Implementation o Health technology assessment
  • Experience in using technical evaluation in policy formulation and decision making
  • Experience of working in, or familiarity with, the National Health Service, local government or social care

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Expert knowledge of policy, research and evidence-related issues in health and social care

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Expert in critical appraisal and the interpretation and synthesis of health care research evidence
