Consultant - SOAHMS

Consultant

West London NHS Trust  provides a full range of mental health, community  and physical healthcare services for children, adults and older people living in the London boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham and Hounslow.

We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

Job overview

Based in a popular area of West London, we are looking for a dynamic and skilled colleague to provide Consultant input to the Ealing Specialist Older Adult Mental Health Service (SOAMHS) within the Older People’s Mental Health Service (OPMHS).

The post-holder will be working alongside the Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Service (CIDS) to ensure seamless and holistic care of patients presenting with dementia. The team continually strives to enhance the experience of patients and is closely linked to Imperial College London both in terms of teaching and research.

The population estimate for Ealing is 342,000 with approximately 8% aged over 70.

Ealing is an ethnically diverse borough, with 51% of people belonging to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups. BME groups living in the UK are more likely to be diagnosed with mental health problems so the prevalence could be expected to be higher.  It has been estimated that 50% of those suffering dementia in the borough are currently unknown to GPs. Specialist referrals for organic illnesses are increasing in Ealing, and at an earlier age. CIDS referrals average around 50-60 a month with a caseload for the team of around 600.

Main duties of the job

You will be joining an established multi-disciplinary clinical team. The SOAMHS teams are integrated and work along New Ways of Working providing a specialist service for the assessment and management of mental health needs to patients over 70 who require older people's services as outlined in the Royal college of Psychiatrists document "Age discrimination in mental health services: making equality a reality". The CIDS team offers a service for all patients with a primary dementia

The advertised post is primarily based in the East of Ealing (Sycamore Lodge in Acton), but works across the borough, also having clinic and office capacity at Elm Lodge in the West of the borough.

It is expected that the medical team members will take a lead role in providing diagnosis and management of new patients after non-medical triage, requesting and interpreting investigations, and discussing with patients and their carers post-diagnostically. The post holder will take a leading role in developing the service, supervising junior colleagues and providing lead medical input to a multi-disciplinary team
