Job overview

This post is based at the  National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN) in London UK with a start date of 23rd September 2024.

The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery is the largest division within the Specialist Hospitals Board of the University College Hospital Foundation NHS Trust. NHNN is an internationally renowned hospital for clinical practice and world-class clinical research in neurosciences.  It is also closely associated with the Institute of Neurology (ION). Together, NHNN and ION are regarded as the premier neurosciences centre in the UK.  In addition to Neurology and Neurosurgery, the NHNN provides comprehensive services in Neuro-rehabilitation, Neuro-critical care and Neuropsychiatry. The NHNN receives secondary, tertiary and quaternary referrals from across the UK and internationally.

Main duties of the job

This role is concerned with supporting, evaluating and leading staff to provide a quality service which is efficient, stays within financial constraints and provides high levels of user satisfaction. The postholder will act with autonomy for day-to-day management of the administration staff within their remit and will lead and mentor non-clinical staff to ensure an excellent level of customer service.

The service manager will be an excellent communicator and have good organisational skills. They will oversee the day to day running of their services, managing demand and capacity, overseeing RTT and support with service developments and improvements.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to contribute to more senior level projects with the support of the Queen Square Divisional Management team.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree and/or an appropriate professional qualification or equivalent experience

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous managerial experience in a large and complex organisation preferably within the NHS
  • Proven experience in effective management of budget and effective leadership of staff
Desirable criteria
  • Proven experience in service improvement and development
  • Proven experience in business planning and in the development and effective leadership implementation of complex strategic & operational plans
  • A proven record of success in managing change while also developing and maintaining high standards of quality

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Proven track record of working under pressure to strict deadlines
  • Ability to prioritise effectively.
  • The ability to both work co-operatively with both clinical and non-clinical staff including other management teams of the Trust and to develop effective working relationships within the directorate.
  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills with ability to motivate and engage individuals and teams
  • A strong understanding of multi-disciplinary issues and commitment to multi-disciplinary working
