Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Data Analyst to support Paediatric and Adolescent Division at University College Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, including the Diabetes Service, The Lighthouse, GIDS and other services as needed. at

This post offers the opportunity for the postholder to work with a variety of services and multi-disciplinary teams.

The postholder will be a part of Business Intelligence team for the paediatric division and support services with their data needs, including for a number of newer services offering innovative models of care and requiring adaptations to traditional NHS data capture systems.

The postholder will be working closely with the Business Intelligence Business Partner and operational and clinical leads in the services they will be supporting. They may be required to line manage some staff relevant to their projects.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be approachable and have strong inter-personal skills, excellent communication skills and be able to communicate complex analytics or contentious subjects to non-analytical professionals and can advise on best approach to in-house data systems; they will be able to lead projects and be flexible in approach when working with clinical and operational teams

Paediatric and Adolescent Division


The Paediatric & Adolescent division, together with Women’s Health, Queen Square division, the Heart Hospital, the Eastman Dental Hospital and the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear hospital form the Specialist Hospitals Clinical Board.
 
The paediatric and adolescent division covers over 30 specialties and employs approximately 400 staff to deliver local, secondary, tertiary and quaternary care for children and young people. The specialities are organised into reporting units such as General Paediatrics and Adolescents, Children and Young People’s Cancer, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Adolescent Endocrinology and Diabetes, Adolescent Medicine and a number of specialist services.
 
Specifically this role will support the Diabetes Service, the Lighthouse, a service for children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse, the Gender Identity Development Service and other services as appropriate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· Providing complex analytical support to operational and clinical staff in CYPCS , Diabetes ,GIDs and Lighthouse in the paediatrics division.

· To provide analysis and support development of reports and indicators across all parts of the hospital business, including (but not limited to):

o Quality of outcomes

o Patient experience

o Safety

· To assist the Business Intelligence Partners in providing the analytical support to all levels and functions within the division. You will do this by taking a leading analytics role covering the full range of the services’ responsibilities, including quality, productivity, optimising operational performance, improving clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction.

· To analyse, investigate and resolve complex queries and issues/problems, including where there is a range of analyses, where there is no precedent or where leading opinions from key stakeholders may conflict.

· To actively contribute to report development based upon feedback from key staff to ensure routine reports remain useful. You will lead on a number of these report developments.

· To produce specifications and, where agreed with the information community, prototypes for new reports. To work with the central business intelligence development team to ensure these reports support business requirements.

· To produce business intelligence in response to ad-hoc information requests relating to the board’s paediatric division.

· To present key sources of benchmarking information that will help the boards and divisions understand their performance in relation to peers, and to provide ad hoc and regular analysis based on that benchmark information.

· To understand the functionality and data items in the EHRS system as it is used by the divisional teams, and use this understanding to support the achievement of business objectives.

· To support the development of divisional specific contents of the EHRS system.

· To prepare plans and strategies for information reporting on all aspects of business area; contributing to planning and formulation of strategies for services

Person specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to relevant Masters degree level or equivalent
  • Holds a relevant Masters’ degree level qualification or equivalent experience.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience in an information analysis role
  • Experience of working with relational databases
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in an NHS informatics role or other healthcare information environment
  • Experience of using Power BI
  • Experience of using Epic, including its BI stack, including developing Radar, Slicer Diver, Reporting Workbench contents
  • Membership of a relevant professional organisation (AphA, BCS, DAMA etc.)

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • In depth specialist knowledge of information analysis and the use of information in support of business objectives
  • Ability to interrogate databases
  • Ability to interpret complex data
  • Ability to convert data to management information
  • Advanced use of MS Excel (macro level)
  • Ability to independently interpret the requirements of information users and present detailed, complex reports that can be understood by a wide audience
  • To be comfortable with quickly integrating into a variety of teams to lead on progressing their data needs
  • Ability to design and develop information systems
  • Understanding of data quality issues. Ability to deal with analytical queries, validate data, spot anomalies and take appropriate action
  • Strong SQL (or equivalent) skills
  • Intermediate / advanced use of MS Excel
Desirable criteria
  • Intermediate use of Power BI
  • Understanding of income algorithms and financial planning in the NHS
  • Understanding of the use of clinical terms and codes within the NHS
