St Thomas’ has one of the largest critical care units in the UK and one of the busiest emergency departments in London. It is also home to Evelina London Children’s Hospital.
Evelina London cares for local children in Lambeth and Southwark and provides specialist services across south east England including cardiac, renal and critical care services. We lead a number of specialist service networks aiming to ensure children are treated locally where possible, but have access to specialist expertise when they need it. Our community services include health visiting, school nursing and support for families of children with long-term conditions.
Our adult community services teams deliver care at the heart of the local communities we serve, working in partnership with GPs, local authorities and other healthcare and voluntary sector organisations. Working with our partners in Lambeth and Southwark, we are focusing on new ways of working to improve care for local patients.

This is a Trust appointment, for 6 months. The first semester will be rotational between RBH and Wimpole Street with weekly rotation between two sites, whereas the next year will be fully at our RBH site and second year at 77 Wimpole Street, W1G 9RU London site. The post holder may also be required to work at any other of the Trust’s sites and within the evolving collaboration with Kings Health Partners.
· This 6-month fellowship is designed to give full knowledge and understanding of nuclear cardiology. Fellows will be encouraged to undertake specialty specific examinations and apply for ARSAC licence to practise nuclear cardiology, if eligible.
Main duties of the job
This clinical fellow postholder will be expected to rotate between RBH and WS in the 1.5 years learning about nuclear cardiology, SPECT-CT and PET, attending MDTs, supporting clinical service, conducting cardiac stress tests, preparing preliminary reports, and supporting the clinical team to run the service efficiently. It is expected that fellow will participate in departmental research, audit, and governance activities. The second year will involve autonomous supervision of our PET department in our WS site.
Working for our organisation
The Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) is a specialist cardiothoracic centre specialising in diseases of the heart and lung, with services for adults (Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Radiology, and Thoracic Medicine) and Paediatrics. It has approximately 2,081 staff, 296 beds, 6 operating theatres, 5 catheter laboratories, a private patients’ ward and extensive imaging facilities. A state-of-the-art diagnostic and imaging centre opened in the autumn of 2021. The Hospital benefits from a joint cardiac and respiratory clinical research facility and has strong links both with King’s College London/ King’s Health Partners and the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College.
The nuclear medicine departments in RBH and HH and PET department at Wimpole Street is led by Dr Kshama Wechalekar supported by Dr Pushan Bharadwaj, Dr Georgia Keramida and Dr Marta Gennaro as consultants who rotate between sites with a rotating clinical fellow. There is a team of medical physics experts led by Lucy Hossen who serve the needs of all 3 sites. The team of technologists, nurses and administrative staff is specific to each site.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- The post holder’s primary role is to take responsibility for the care of patients within facility.
- To lead advanced life support resuscitation in response to cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, etc.
- Supervising scanning lists, providing urgent/verbal preliminary reports after discussion with a consultant and teaching junior imaging trainees.
- To perform pharmacological stress tests for cardiac imaging, especially for PET-CT.
- To medically support in preparing patients for the most appropriate cardiac state for CTCA imaging.
- Imaging assessment of PET and Nuclear medicine images
- To be present and available for all scans involving the use of contrast media.
- Participating in clinical and imaging meetings.
- Abide by local rules of radiation protection under the direction of the RPS/RPA.
- Participate in audit and be committed to improving patient care within this facility.
- Actively support ongoing research projects with patient interviews and supervision of imaging in accordance with research study protocols.
- To contribute to the development and standards of imaging techniques.
- Ensuring that all patient records are complete and ready within the agreed timeframes.
- Participate where necessary in-patient history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing.
- Maintain good communication with Imaging Services Manager, General Manager and Clinical Directors where necessary.
- The post holder will be expected to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and to contribute to the smooth running of the private facility.

6.4 Information Management:
- Responsibility for compiling an accurate summary of patients reports in a timely manner.
- Participate in the collection of audit and research data as required.
- Use data which will contribute to the improvement of patient care.
- Post holder will ensure safe importation and exportation of confidential image data.
- Post holder will ensure the accurate recording of all clinical information recorded in the information management and picture archiving and communication systems used.
