Research Fellow

Band 8a

Job overview

We are looking for an experienced qualitative researcher to join the Centre for Outcomes and Experience Research in Children’s Health Illness and Disability (ORCHID) at Great Ormond Street Hospital to lead and deliver an exciting research project focused on the delivery of equitable cancer care to children and young people with and without a learning disability and/or Autism Spectrum Condition.  ORCHID is a dedicated research unit led by nurses and allied health professionals, the main aim of which is to improve the health, well-being and quality of life of children and young people and their families through a patient-focused, multi-professional and integrated programme of qualitative and quantitative research.

Main duties of the job

The Research Fellow will work autonomously within ORCHID alongside, leading of all aspects of the study in conjunction with the Chief Investigator and other members of the research team.  Data collection will involve ethnographic observations of the cancer journey of children with/without a learning disability and/or Autism Spectrum Condition and their families to understand their needs and experiences. This will include interviews with children, siblings and parents using creative methods, ensuring no-one is excluded. Identification of what is provided nationally to these patients will be through surveying children's cancer treatment Centres in England and exploring staff views of caring for them through an online survey and interviews. Findings from the study will inform how cancer care is provided to children with/without a learning disability and/or Autism Spectrum Condition, ensuring resources are allocated fairly and appropriately to those who need it, when they need it, with the potential for fewer unmet needs. The findings will also inform the development of the new GOSH Children’s Cancer Centre.
