Rotational Pharmacy Technician – Operational Services
Band 4 to 5 progression

We have an exciting opportunity for well-organised, enthusiastic and self-motivated Pharmacy Technicians to join our technician rotation in operational services with a keen interest in the provision of medicines to paediatric patients. This will include working in the Dispensary, Homecare, Purchasing and Distribution. During each rotation you will gain practical experience, assisting in the delivery of the service in each section. This will include carrying out inpatient and outpatient dispensing including extemporaneous dispensing, patient counselling, ward top ups, purchasing and homecare services. Must be self-motivated and show a willingness to learn and be trained. You will also be supported towards achieving the accredited checking for Pharmacy Technician qualification/in house qualification. You must be able to pay close attention to detail and consistently produce work to the required standard within set deadlines. You will have good verbal and written communication skills, be a strong team player and able to work using their own initiative, within the limits of the job role. We welcome applications from technicians working in community as full on the job training will be given. Achievement of progression to Band 5 is clearly outlined within the Job Description. You will be expected to participate in the extended hours rota which includes working late nights, weekends and Bank Holidays.

 

Main duties of the job

  • To dispense outpatient, in-patient and discharge prescriptions in accordance with the standard operating procedures
  • To dispense Controlled Drug requisitions for wards and departments.
  •  To maintain the PMR on the pharmacy dispensing system.
  • To counsel patients/carers on the safe and effective use of their prescribed medicines.
  • To answer any queries in a professional and courteous manner or refer to the appropriate person as necessary
  • To always maintain patient confidentiality
  • To provide support to the Team Leader with the co-ordination of the ward Topping Up rota and to assist with the training of new staff
  • To become familiar with the operation of the automated dispensing robot and the Intelligent Storage system
  • To be part of the Pharmacy Medicines Finance team and assist in updating homecare high-cost database. Maintain relevant computerised records and other financial documentation, complying with audit requirements
  • To raise purchase orders and process invoices
  • To complete the Medicines Optimisation Training Programme (MOP)
  • To attend and participate in the various departmental meetings including CPD sessions

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential criteria
  • BTEC and NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Sciences or NVQ Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF) Level 3 (City and Guilds) and Level 3 Diploma in Pharmaceutical Science (QCF) or equivalent qualification supported by Pharmacy work experience
  • GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician
  • Holds a current ACPT qualification
  • Accreditation in Medicines Management for Pharmacy Technicians (AIMMS) or Medicines Optimisation Programme (MOP)- or willing to complete
Desirable criteria
  • Edward Jenner or Equivalent qualification
  • Educational Supervisor qualification or equivalent

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Relevant Dispensary experience as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Familiar with Dispensary and Distribution stock control systems
