Job overview

We are seeking an experienced, skilled and compassionate individual for the role of Programme Director and Operational Lead for the NHS Children and Young People’s Gender Service (London), due to the upcoming maternity leave of the current post holder. The post is available on a full or part time basis, as a secondment or fixed term contract from November 2024 until summer 2025.

 

The new NHS Children and Young People’s Gender Service (London) went live on 1st April 2024, delivered by a partnership of Evelina London Children’s Hospital (part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust), Great Ormond Street Hospital and the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide strong programme leadership and expertise to this important, high profile, and complex programme, working closely with the service, the three partner Trusts, other regional centres and NHS England at a National level. This will include providing strategic and senior operational support to the ongoing development of the new service, ensuring the delivery is consistent with the Cass Review Final Report and NHS England Implementation Plan and other regional centres. The role will be required to provide assurance internally and externally on the ongoing development of the new service, via regional and national governance forum.

 We are looking for an individual with significant senior experience of establishing and/or running new services, supporting service to develop and continually improve their performance. The post holder will have experience of managing complex, multi-disciplinary and ideally politically contentious programmes. The successful individual will be proactive, and solution orientated, with the ability to influence and collaborate with a wide range of people.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Extensive leadership and operational management experience in a medium/large complex acute healthcare provider setting.
  • Significant experience in leading diverse project teams in the delivery of phased, strategic based programmes in one or more specific areas, including for example: management of change, management of risk, management of benefits, and programme budgeting.
  • Knowledge of Information Governance, SOPs and other governance, national and professional standards of practice or other regulations.
  • Significant experience of business planning processes and financial protocols.
  • Experience of all aspects of staff management
  • Strong track record of managing complex operational situations that involve staff from all levels within the organisation, and across a range of professional and organisational boundaries.
  • Good understanding of the key issues facing the NHS and the wider health economy, particularly in relation to this area

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • An expert communicator, able to provide and receive highly complex, highly sensitive or highly contentious information where there are significant barriers to acceptance and to people with extremely strong opposing views; needing to be overcome using the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of IT systems and software programmes such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and understanding/experience of electronic health records.

Applicant requirements

The postholder will have regular contact with vulnerable people and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
