Job overview

We are seeking a band 8A Research Business Analyst to help gather the requirements and project manage requests for clean and relevant datasets for research in a timely and accurate manner. The role requires strong analytical, people, communication and project management skills. It offers intellectual challenge, autonomy, and an opportunity to work at one of London's best performing foundation trusts at a challenging and exciting time for NHS organisations.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities

        To oversee the data management and availability of clean and relevant datasets for appropriate teams in a timely and accurate manner.

        Create and curate routinely generated clinical data in formats that can be made accessible for research

      To ensure the continuation of the provision of high quality data to be used for reporting and analysis primarily by the two departments involved.

      To support and develop specialist datasets, including supporting the curation of a commercially viable, deep, longitudinal research datasets such as oncology and metabolic diseases.

      To be support with evaluating key business intelligence reports, combining detailed operational awareness with knowledge of data and systems.

      To lead, when required, on the technical design, maintenance and development of special datasets based on specifications agreed with the departments.

·     To engage with senior clinicians and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to map and improve data flows and quality.

      To lead on the communication of complex technical specifications and intelligence reports to Trust senior managers and executives.

      To quality assure key executive reports before they are published and highlight on exception performance issues to seniors.

      To work as an effective and integral part of the Information/Data Warehouse team to ensure reporting is consistent and accurate and is delivered within the agreed timescales.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Information Systems

        To be responsible, when required, for support with Qlik applications as part of the agreed work programme, with the support of analysts of the team and the Research Business Partner

 

        To bring together through various reporting methodologies, the individual strands of External and Internal reporting for the two departments through making appropriate datasets available.

 

        To be responsible for dataset creation for complex clinical outcome benchmark models commissioned by the departments.

        To follow the Information Team strategy of using Azure SQL/DataBricks/Palantir Foundry to return datasets from the Trust’s Data Warehouse and support in the use of Qlik applications/Foundry to disseminate the results to the Trust

 

        To support where appropriate to developing integration of EHR and Research EDC (eCRF) systems to reduce duplicate data entry and increase efficiency and data quality.

 

Communication and Relationships

        To receive, analyse and communicate a wide range of highly complex technical information to colleagues, including junior analysts and peers, where cooperation and comprehension is fundamentally necessary.

 

        To liaise with clinical and management leads to ensure there is regular provision of relevant information to support key work streams such as:

 

o   Research Strategy Board

o   meetings

o   Service Line Reporting (SLR)

o   Research Partner deliverables

o   Productivity and Efficiency

o   Clinical Outcome Benchmarking

 

        To communicate to Strategy leads, Financial and Operational managers, regarding the use and interpretation of the production process and content of Information Management data and reports using laymen terms; agreeing assumptions and showing how these can offer advantages in delivering against Trust’s strategic objectives.

 

        To promote the corporate Patient Administration System (Cerner) as the principal source for data entry and analysis, working to improve data quality in conjunction with the related teams for data quality.

 

        To work with Head of Information to understand how to make best use of the analyst resource, coordinating pan organisation information processes and taking lead for delivery of strategic analysis and monitoring of compliance against Trust Performance Assurance Framework.

 

        To work in partnership with Lead Strategist, Business Analysts, Head of Financial Planning, Performance Managers and General Managers to ensure that clinical and research activity is being processed robustly so that Trust income is secured.

 

        To liaise with relevant staff within the Trust such as the Clinical Coding Team, Divisional Operational and Information/Data Warehouse teams to ensure that clinical and research data is reliably reportable in an accurate, complete, consistent and timely manner.

 

        Work closely with, and influence, key executive members across the Trust, including Divisional Directors, Director of Finance and Director of Strategy.

 

        Collaborate and work with Research Informatics leads at the Imperial AHSC, in North West London and on a national level to support the local contribution to large clinical and research data initiatives.

 

        To develop and analyse datasets on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Research to drive an increase of research participation from under-served communities.

 

Knowledge, Training and Experience

        To use a highly developed specialist knowledge of NHS Data and Acute Informatics effectively within the Trust to stimulate an advancement of a research and business intelligence culture.

 

        To have a highly developed knowledge of systems used within the Information Team (e.g. Qlik, SQL) and be adaptable and able to learn about Research focussed information systems, and to be able to extract data from them, transform, cleanse and analyse it (e.g. PICIS, Lilie, EDGE, Datix etc).

 

        To provide guidance on national clinical benchmarking sources and data items catalogued in the NHS data dictionary.

 

        To be responsible for ensuring reporting tools and strategies continue to be relevant to performance for the Research department, evaluating and supporting contemporary information needs and supporting communication plans.

 

        To apply knowledge from previous modernisation projects and theoretical papers to identify risks and benefits to system changes.    

 

Planning and Organisational Skills

        To plan and organise strategic Information Management projects, creating datasets and using/supporting use of Qlik and Foundry as the Trust’s main business intelligence tool. 

 

        To reflect the wide range and complexity of healthcare and research provision, in community and acute care settings. This may include working collaboratively with different organisations (e.g. supporting information requirements for community services). The ability to understand complex requirements, data models and data flows will be essential, as will the ability to translate concepts into understandable and useable information for strategic, operational and clinical management.

 

        To respond to and prioritise ad-hoc requests for information from both the Research Department and research partners we work with, ensuring that information supplied is relevant, insightful and in an accurate, complete and timely fashion.

 

        To support the Head of Information in ensuring that procedures carried out are correctly documented and maintained in a transparent manner for all routine datasets, reports and investigating and performing a Root Cause Analysis into data processing issues that arise.

 

Other Responsibilities

        To support the development and appropriate usage of Trust wide clinical information systems, including integration and full reconciliation with corporate systems.

 

        To attend regular divisional operational/business meetings and regional/national NHS Information Management meetings as and when required, as per instruction of the Head of Information. The post holder will be required to chair meetings when required by Head of Information.

 

        Maintains and protects patient confidentiality at all times and in accordance with the Data Protection Act and relevant Trust policies.

 

        Provides training and guidance to Strategy, Divisional Operational and Performance teams with regards to systems, standards and reporting.

 

        To carry out any other duties as requested by the General Manager or Head of Information.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Master levels (or equivalent experience) in research, computer science, data engineering or related subject or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of continuing profession development

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of requirements gathering for complex requests around specialist data & datasets creation – ideally in the field of Research
  • Experience of leading and delivering complex change and strategy development programmes in a politically sensitive and complex environment
  • Ability to present complex technical ideas/solutions to non-technical audiences
Desirable criteria
  • Extensive experience working with Research departments and Research datasets
  • Experience in working with databases and business intelligence tools, namely SQL and Qlik
  • Experience of warehouse and relational database design and data
  • Analysing information in a health environment, including experience of working with Research Datasets and EDC systems
  • Proven experience in analysing and interpreting complex datasets and the production of performance data sets and dashboards

Skills and knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of information management gained through senior management experience
  • Understanding of role of NHS data standards, policies and data definitions
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both written and oral, at all levels, both within the trust and with external stakeholders
