Job overview

We are inviting applications from an experienced Clinical or Counselling Psychologist to lead our sexual difficulties service.  We are particularly interested to receive applications from psychologists with experience in or relevant to the specialism of sexual health and psychosexual difficulties, as well as leadership and supervisory experience.  We particularly welcome applications from people from minoritised backgrounds including ethnicity, sexual and gender diversity and ability.  

The role offers a broad range of opportunities including leadership,  psychosexual therapy, supervision and consultation, teaching and service development. The role would suit psychologists who are passionate about supporting people who have experienced marginalisation. It provides opportunities to work critically and systemically with themes including the impact of social stigma and intersectional identities. 

The successful candidate/s will be joining a team of experienced psychologists, passionate about delivering high quality and innovative HIV and sexual health services. The team was shortlisted for Team of the Year at CNWL's Therapies Awards in 2023.

The successful candidate will be supported in their professional development, including access to CPD, The post holders will work under clinical and management supervision of the Lead Psychologist for HIV and Sexual Health services. 

Main duties of the job

  • Psychosexual Lead: To lead the psychosexual difficulties service. 
  • To provide a sexual health psychology service to clients of the Mortimer Market Centre and Archway Centre, providing highly specialist psychological and psychosexual assessment and treatment.
  • To supervise qualified and trainee psychologists and psychosexual therapists as required, and offering advice, consultation and supervision on clients’ psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and to other, non-professional carers.
  • To work autonomously within professional guidelines and within the overall framework of the service’s policies and procedures.
  • To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Leadership 
  • Psychosexual Lead role: To lead the Sexual Problems Assessment and Treatment Service (SPATS). To work closely with the medical lead to coordinate and manage the SPATS service, represent Psychology at relevant meetings and advise the Lead Psychologist and professional management where psychological and / or organisational matters need addressing.
  1. Clinical
  •  To provide specialist psychological and psychosexual assessments of referred clients, using interview, formal psychometric and other assessment methods as appropriate.
  • To formulate and devise psychological and psychosexual treatment and management plans for referred clients and to provide psychological treatment, using a range of specialist psychological interventions appropriate to the service.
  • To provide specialist psychological advice, guidance, consultation and supervision to colleagues and other professionals, to assist in the formulation, diagnosis and treatment of clients.
  • To provide specialist consultation and guidance to colleagues and other professionals on psychological/psychosexual intervention.
  • To provide reports and communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients.
  • To liaise with other health and social care staff, from a range of agencies, in the care provided to clients. 
  1. Teaching, training, and supervision
  •  To provide clinical supervision for qualified and trainee psychologists as required.
  • To provide clinical placements for trainee clinical psychologists, as required, ensuring the trainees acquire the necessary skills, competencies and experience to contribute effectively to health care, and to contribute to the assessment and evaluation of such competencies. To provide professional and clinical supervision of trainee psychologists and psychosexual therapy trainees as required.
  • To continue to develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate teaching, training and clinical supervision.
  • To provide advice, consultation, training and supervision to other health and social care staff working with the client group (e.g. nurses, doctors, psychologists) and within the trust, as appropriate.
  • To provide advice, supervision and training to other psychologists within the service, as appropriate. 
  1. Management, Recruitment, Policy and Service Development
  •  To contribute to the development, evaluation and monitoring of the team’s operational policies and services, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service evaluation and audit.
  • To advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need to be addressed.
  • To manage the workloads of trainee psychologists, within the framework of the service’s policies and procedures.
  • To be involved, as appropriate, in the shortlisting and interviewing of assistant psychologists and trainee psychologists.
  1. Research and service evaluation
  •  To use theory, evidence-based literature and research to support and critique evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.
  • To undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.
  • To undertake project management, including complex audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the service to help develop and evaluate service provision.
  1. General
  •  To ensure the development and maintenance of the highest personal standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the post holder's professional and service manager(s).
  • To contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology within the service area, by exercising the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.
  • To maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping including electronic data entry and recording, report writing and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society and Trust policies and procedures.
  • To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies and issues of relevance to the service and client group.
  • To undertake such other duties and responsibilities, appropriate to the grade of the post, as may be agreed with the Lead Psychologist for HIV and Sexual Health.

Person specification

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, as accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) as a Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Evidence of continuous and relevant professional development (CPD).
  • Training in supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology
  • Post-qualification training in Psychosexual Therapy or Psychosexual medicine (Psychosexual Lead only)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as a qualified Clinical / Counselling Psychologist including substantial post-qualification experience.
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including community, primary care, outpatient and inpatient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
  • Experience of working in a sexual health setting.
  • Experience of working with individuals and couples with sexual difficulties
  • Experience of developing and delivering therapeutic interventions working with individual, couples and groups.
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts and working with diverse client groups
  • Experience, skill and flexibility to contribute to effective working within a multi-disciplinary team setting
  • Experience of developing and delivering teaching, training and supervision

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management. Ability to apply this to individuals, couples, families and groups.
  • High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
  • Well-developed skills in the effective communication of highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to a wide variety of recipients - service users, their families, carers and other professional colleagues in a range of settings within and outside the NHS.
  • Knowledge of legislation and academic literature of the specialism of HIV and sexual health and mental health generally.
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in specific difficult to treat groups (e.g. dual diagnoses, people with additional needs).

  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice.
  • Ability to work autonomously, setting appropriate goals, in accordance with professional ethics guidelines and Trust policies.
  • An interest in developing some area of clinical expertise.
  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
