Job Purpose
This is a broad summary of the role detailing key areas of operation and responsibilities – further detail will be provided in the Main Duties and Responsibilities section, below, which provides more granular detail. This role is 9-5 3 days a week.
The post holder will be responsible for:
· Providing highly specialist assessment, diagnosis and intervention to children and young people with dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing disorders), supporting parents, clients and other professionals in all issues related to client management. Liaison with the MDT is an integral part of the role.
· Providing highly specialist clinical supervision and line management to other speech and language therapists and support in the training and development of junior dysphagia therapists in the team.
· Contributing to developments within the Dysphagia team and to the broader service including in the development of policies and procedures relating to clinical care, evidence-based practice, care pathways and outcome development. You will contribute to Trust, service and professional wide initiatives.
· Delivering training/courses to staff as relevant to the post e.g. specific in-service training across settings to a variety of audiences e.g. parents and staff in school settings
Main duties of the job
·
· To follow clinical guidelines and adapt to local service needs on the basis of specialist clinical knowledge.
· To take lead on the development of team objectives or projects in liaison with peers and/or manager
· To develop care protocols for specific clinical issues within the clinical specialism of dysphagia.
· To monitor issues with service delivery including shortfall, service pressures and share with Clinical Lead with suggestions and recommendations.
· To take the lead in working groups, policy development groups in the clinical specialism of dysphagia.
· To contribute to interagency/multi-disciplinary team building and policy development.
· To implement service and Dysphagia team plans and policies and make contribute to their improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
· To assess, develop and implement Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapy
provision for children with dysphagia.
· To write reports reflecting highly specialist knowledge including initial assessment/review reports, EHCNA, Annual Reviews and Tribunal reports.
· To provide appropriate highly specialist intervention and evaluate outcomes.
· To provide advice and support to others regarding the management and care of children and young people with dysphagia.
· To adapt practice to meet individual client and families circumstances.
· To use highly specialist knowledge and evidence-based practice to inform sound clinical judgements/decision making for case management and provision of care plans.
· To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment seeking advice as appropriate.
Person specification
Education/Qualification
Essential criteria
- Recognised SLT degree or equivalent
- Health Care Professionals Council Licence to Practice
- Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
- Evidence of competency level C or above of the RCSLT Dysphagia Competency Framework
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Masters degree or equivalent
- Membership of relevant Clinical Excellence Networks (CENs)
- Advanced dysphagia qualification /post graduate paediatric dysphagia training e.g. Manchester Post Basic Dysphagia Course
- Evidence of completion of highly specialist short courses in dysphagia management
Experience
Essential criteria
- Post graduate paediatric dysphagia experience (4 years) including non-oral feeding
- Experience in contributing to policy, planning and service development
- Experience of planning, organising and delivering training programmes
- Experience of assessment to identify the dysphagia needs/risks of children and young people on the caseload.
Desirable criteria
- Experience working as a highly specialist speech & language therapist in relevant clinical specialism in last 18 months
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
