Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced nurse to join our dedicated Looked after Children’s nursing team within Barnet.  

We are an integrated team working with a range of providers to include professionals from education, social care and health.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for a caseload of looked after children and young people, autonomously undertaking direct specialist clinical work including carrying out statutory health assessment reviews on Looked after Children. 

The post holder will work in partnership with the Named nurse and Named Dr for LAC to implement National Guidance and Local Policy for Looked after Children

The post holder will work with colleagues to ensure Looked after Children receive timely, child and young person focused assessments and interventions in line with Statutory Guidance

The post holder will deliver training to foster carers and other health and social care professionals

The post holder will have responsibility for children placed out of borough.  This includes undertaking the health assessment and/or liaison with other agencies and services, coordinating effective care and acting as an advocate where necessary.

The post holder will provide expertise and demonstrate sophisticated clinical skills to work directly with vulnerable children and adolescents from a background of trauma and/or neglect.

Education/Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (RGN/BSc)
  • Educated to degree level in nursing or health related field or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years post registration experience working in the acute sector or in the community
  • Post qualification degree in health visiting or other health related subject

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working with children
  • Adolescents and families in a range of health settings
  • Teaching groups and individuals
  • Working with other agencies statutory and voluntary
  • Experience of working with Children in Care or a sound understanding
  • Working in a multicultural setting
  • Consultation with young people

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of clinical governance as it applies to Child Protection  Knowledge of risk management
  • Knowledge of current relevant research findings in children’s health
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Good analytical skills and the ability to make sound judgments
  • Good Organisational skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to develop and monitor standards of Practice by use of audit and research
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • IT literate including the ability to use excel and interpret data
  • Knowledge of local authority policy and practice including Children in Need
  • Knowledge of the Children Act Working Together, All London Procedures
  • Understanding of health issues affecting children and adolescents
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills one to one and group situations
  • Ability to secure health information from relevant health/ specialists to inform the process of assessment
