Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
Full Time 10PAs (3 posts available)
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) and the option of additional subspeciality interest in other areas (applicants with an interest in asthma are particularly encouraged to apply).
These are substantive full-time posts (10PAs). Part time/job share option will be considered on request. We are looking for innovative and enthusiastic colleagues to join our Paediatric Department. The post will be based primarily in the paediatric ED department with paediatric outpatient DCC activity. The post holder will cover the paediatric emergency department (PED) on a 1:5 rostered basis which includes a rapid access clinic and telephone advice service for local GPs. Outpatient clinics will be part of the timetable during non-PED DCC and there is opportunity for this role to include leading a new paediatric asthma MDT service. Opportunity to develop expertise in other areas of paediatric sub-speciality interest will also be offered.
Main duties of the job
The post is built around an expected 10 programmed activity (PA) job plan (see job description) and will provide onsite cover in paediatric ED until 10pm in conjunction with members of the wider ED team. The expected job plans will include 8 PAs of DCC activity. Applications will be considered from individuals with a CCT (or within 6 months of CCT date at the time of interview) or with a Certificate of Equivalence of Specialist Registration (CESR).
This post will provide collaborative working with Paediatric Emergency Department services and Paediatric Leadership in providing care for Children in ED. These are new posts created to enhance the patient experience for children coming through ED, improve the quality of paediatric emergency care and provide training and supervision for Junior doctors going through training in ED. Once fully recruited we will establish a PEM consultant team consisting of 5 paediatric trained PEM consultants working alongside 2 PEM trained emergency medicine consultants.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration (or eligibility to obtain)
- MRCPCH or equivalent
- CCT in Paediatrics and on GMC’s Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT from the date of the interview or have confirmed eligibility for Specialist Registration
- Newborn Life Support (NLS) certification
- Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) certification
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree eg. MD/PhD/MBA
- Instructor for NLS/APLS
- Qualification in Medical Education
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Wide range of paediatric experience including acute paediatrics and neonatology in a tertiary centre at middle grade or above
Desirable criteria
- Good experience in child safeguarding , serious case review/IMR
- Evidence of specific interest in Paediatric Emergency Medicine
Specific Additional Skills
Essential criteria
- Competency in Paediatric procedures
- Competency in Neonatal procedures
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of specific interest in ambulatory paediatrics and or neonatology
- Evidence of any subspecialty interest
Management Skills
Essential criteria
- Awareness and understanding of clinical governance
- Involvement in management appropriate to experience
Desirable criteria
- Attended management training course

Experience in Training, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable commitment and ability to teach and train undergraduates and junior doctors
