Job overview

An exciting opportunity of general manager of the surgical cluster of services has arisen at Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.  The surgical cluster incorporates Surgery and Urology; Theatres and Anaesthetics; Gastroenterology and Endoscopy; and Orthopaedics and Rheumatology. 

Kingston is recognised as a national leader in theatre productivity and post-pandemic elective recovery.  We opened a new endoscopy suite in 2020 which is fully JAG compliant.

Main duties of the job

The General Manager for the Cluster is a high-profile leadership role within the Trust.

The post holder will be responsible for overall management / leadership of the cluster, working closely with the Clinical Director to deliver, develop and evaluate all services within their remit. Cluster 6 comprises Theatres & Anaesthetics; Surgery & Urology; Orthopaedics & Rheumatology; Gastroenterology & Endoscopy.

The General Manager will ensure that effective and efficient structures are in place to ensure that all standards of patient care are met and associated risk and governance matters are managed. The post holder will support the Clinical Director in developing efficient and effective patient centred services, meeting key financial and operational performance targets, and putting in place effective processes for delivering national / local targets, reviewing the efficiency and effectiveness of services in terms of cost effectiveness and financial flows. 

The post holder will work with internal and external stakeholders to identify and exploit opportunities for service redesign through the application of relevant service improvement techniques.

The post holder will deputise for the Associate Director as required and participate in the on-call rota for the Trust

Essential criteria
  • Education to degree level or evidence of sound intellectual ability and ongoing personal development at senior management level
  • Recognised post-graduate management qualification or equivalent experience.

  • Masters level education

Experience

  • Significant general and operational management experience to include the management of a large multi-disciplinary group of staff – part of which to have been in the NHS
  • A proven record of success in managing significant operational / strategic change whilst also developing and maintaining the provision of a high-quality service, within a clinical setting, with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience of team working and building and maintaining effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary environment
  • Fully developing staff potential through facilitating training, development and education initiatives
  • Demonstrable ability to lead and influence
  • Evidence of sound budgetary management experience
  • Experience in service redesign and project management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with external organisations (CCGs, GP practices, social services departments)
