We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and experienced clinical psychologist looking for a part time position (0.4 WTE) working in the Paediatric Diabetes Service at West Middlesex University Hospital (WMUH) hospital

The successful post holder will be well supported in a friendly and innovative team. We will also consider applications from newly qualified candidates who would be employed at Band7.

You will have significant post qualification experience in child/paediatric psychology, with some experience of working in diabetes being highly desirable. 

There are regular meetings with colleagues within the wider CNWL Paediatric Psychology Section, providing CPD and creating a large supportive network of Paediatric Psychologists working in 7 acute hospitals across northwest London. There is also a subgroup of clinical psychologists working in the paediatric diabetes teams across the section who meet regularly.

To provide a qualified Clinical Psychology service to children, young people and their families, seen within the specialist paediatric diabetes service at West Middlesex Hospital. 

The role will involve working as an integrated member of the Paediatric Diabetes Team to support children, young people and families on a primarily outpatient basis, with occasional inpatient work. The post holder will provide a psychology assessment and intervention service for the local Paediatric Diabetes population, Type 1 and Type 2. 

The role requires regular liaison with MDTs' schools and external agencies involved in the care of children and young people. Experience with a range of ways of working is required, drawing on different theoretical frameworks to meet presenting needs.

As part of the Central and North West London Foundation NHS Trust (CNWL), Paediatric Psychology services are provided to four acute hospital trusts, (7 hospital sites), across the North West London region. There are regular opportunities to link with the psychologists working across the trusts both informally and formally for CPD and peer support. The CNWL Paediatric Psychology Service meets once a month for business, journal and research presentations, as well as clinical and skill sharing. There is a diabetes subgroup within this who also meet on a regular basis to review and share practice across the 6 MDT diabetes teams.

West Middlesex University Hospital is a large teaching hospital offering secondary and tertiary level medical services to an ethnically and socio-economically diverse population. Clinical Psychology services are provided to Paediatric Outpatients and the Special Care Baby Unit.

1. To provide specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the team based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures,
rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care.

2. To formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s mental health problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of the client’s problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of
efficacy, across the full range of care settings.

3. To be responsible for implementing a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis, adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

4.To provide specialist psychological advice guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.

5.To provide professional and clinical supervision of trainee, assistant Clinical Psychologists and, if appropriate level of experience, newly qualified Clinical Psychologists.

Training and Qualifications

  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS. Registration with the HCPC

  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology

Experience

  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
  • Demonstrate further specialist training/experience through having received a minimum of 50 hours clinical supervision of working as a specialist clinical psychologist or an alternative agreed by the Head Psychologist.
  • Experience in the use of a range of neuropsychology assessments with children & young people.
  • Experience of exercising full clinical responsibility for clients’ psychological care and treatment, both as a professionally qualified care co-ordinator and also within the context of a MDT care plan.
  • Experience of delivering teaching and training to professional groups

  • Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision of clinical psychology trainees.
  • Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts
  • Post qualification experience of working as a Paediatric Psychologist with Diabetes

Knowledge and Skills

  • Well developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
  • Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non- professional groups
  • Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex, multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology
  • Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the BPS
  • Formal training in supervision of other psychologists
  • Well developed skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration.

  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and challenging behaviour
  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multimedia materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
  • Must be capable of accountability for own work, of autonomous clinical practice and working towards defined results.
