Job overview

The post holder will be an integral member of the patient safety team delivering ergonomic and manual handling service for the trust to ensure continuous access to expertise advice on the wards as well as other clinical areas on the safe use of clinical equipment (including specialist orthopaedic equipment). The service aims to prevent and reduce work related musculoskeletal disorders arising from work related activities and promote a strong health and safety culture.

Main duties of the job

  • Training & Education: Deliver evidence-based enhanced moving and handling training programs. Monitor and adjust the content of training as needed.
  • Assessments: Conduct individual employee assessments on ergonomics and manual handling, and risk assessments for patients with complex needs.
  • Equipment Management: Implement evidence-based equipment provisions to reduce harm risks to patients, carers, and staff.
  • Risk Management: Assist with risk management, incident support, and policy development. Monitor and review incidents, participate in investigations, and make recommendations.
  • Health & Wellbeing: Promote health and wellbeing for trust employees and support the development and delivery of safety improvement plans.
  • Professional Networking: Establish and maintain networks with relevant professionals, agencies, and organisations.
  • Research & Reporting: Contribute to research projects, produce monthly quality, safety, and risk reports, and support the safety team with FOI requests.
  • Safety Monitoring: Ensure the implementation of best practices in moving and handling, monitor safety alerts, audits, and report through trust governance structures.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsibilities

·       To deliver evidenced based enhanced moving and handling training programme

·       To monitor the effectiveness of manual handling training and adjust the content of training as appropriate

·       To undertake individualised employee assessments on ergonomics and manual handling.

·       To undertake individualised risk assessments for patients with complex needs.

·       Carry out advanced assessments of difficult and complex workplace issues.

·       Implement appropriate equipment provision that is evidence based, in order to reduce the risk of harm to patients, their carers and staff

·       Establish and maintain professional networks with all relevant professionals, agencies, and client organisations.

·       To assist with risk management, including incident management support and policy development

·       To promote health and wellbeing for trust employees

·       To contribute to research projects that may occur relating to manual handling

·       In conjunction with the ward and departmental managers, develop an annual plan of tailored work based training sessions.

·       Undertake an annual training needs analysis and review the training programme in light of any incidents including the Trust Induction.

·       To be responsible for the safe use of equipment by others within the training environment.

·       To be responsible for the health and safety of staff within the training environment and to monitor individual requirements e.g. previous injuries and individual limitations.

·       To ensure that the post holder remains up-to-date with advances in the field of moving and handling and implements what is considered ‘best practice

·       To monitor and review all incidents reported on Ulysses and follow up actions as required

·       Lead on or participate as part of the incident investigation team (After Action Reviews, Patient Safety Incident Investigations, Patient Safety Reviews) requiring investigation and make recommendations as required, regarding improvements to support patient/staff safety.

·       To support the development and delivery of safety improvement plans.

·       To contribute towards the production of the monthly quality, safety and risk reports and provide written reports as appropriate

·       Support the safety team with responding to FOI requests

·       To ensure the actions from relevant safety alerts and relevant safety audits are identified, evaluated, monitored and reported on through Trust governance structures with appropriate escalation or lack of progress where required

Person specification

Professional Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Professional qualification e.g. Nurse, physiotherapist, occupational therapist
  • Teaching qualification: Relevant certificate in Moving and Handling
Desirable criteria
  • Delivery of presentations / training

Experience

  • 2 years experience of working in the NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of NHS environment
