Job overview
The Named Midwife Safeguarding will undertake the role of providing expert clinical leadership within the maternity services in accordance with the National Guidance ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children’ (2018) and in partnership with the Divisional Lead for Women’s Services and the senior midwifery team.
The Named Midwife will ensure that there are robust internal policies and guidelines for safeguarding within the Trust which take account of national and local guidance enabling the delivery of all the key objectives and assurance in line with all statutory functions and CQC requirements for Maternity Safeguarding and Safeguarding Children and Young People.
The post holder will take an active role in leading and driving service improvement and Trust Safeguarding Strategy. This will be achieved through delivering training and working with colleagues and other agencies to develop and evaluate effective care pathways for vulnerable and disadvantaged women: includes teenage pregnancies, women with mental health needs, substance misuse, domestic abuse and women effected and affected by female genital mutilation and recently arrived asylum seekers.
You will lead and support midwives and other health professionals to realize their full potential as autonomous practitioners placing vulnerable women and their families at the centre of care planning, to empower midwives to support and meet the needs of all women, particularly those with complex maternity care issues.
Main duties of the job
To lead on public health addressing inequalities as they relate to safeguarding and vulnerable families:
- In conjunction with the Integrated Safeguarding Board and Head of Safeguarding, ensure that the maternity maintains optimum standards to meet its responsibilities in relation to safeguarding children.
- Provide expert advice (direct and indirect) and support on safeguarding children and adults matters to individual staff working within maternity, and within corporate forums and meetings
- Ensuring that policies, practice and training are in place within maternity to meet these objectives.
- To challenge unsafe practice and take relevant action to ensure appropriate safeguarding of children and adults.
- To ensure the provision of safeguarding children advice and supervision to midwifery and obstetric staff.
- Lead the audit and research within the context of public health as it relates to safeguarding and health inequalities.
- Identify casual factors contributing to infant mortality as it relates to safeguarding and women with complex social needs.
- To undertake Individual Management Reviews (IMR) for the London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust aspect of child safeguarding practice reviews and domestic homicide reviews
- Interprets and applies national policies in order to influence and where appropriate lead change at a local level.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Current NMC registration as a Registered Midwife
- BSc in midwifery or related subject
- Safeguarding children and/or mental health qualification or equivalent experience
- Educated to masters level or willing to undertake
- Teaching qualification
Desirable criteria
- Safeguarding supervision course
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience within specialist field of specialty at Band 7
- Understanding of working with complex family situations
- Skilled in Multi agency assessment and working together with partner agencies
- Experience of contributing to IMR’s
- In depth understanding of the complexities related to child protection
- Knowledge of quality standard setting
- Research and audit skills
- Demonstrable leadership and management skills
- Experience of multi-agency working
Desirable criteria
