Job overview
We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Inpatient Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry, Eastlake Ward, Harrow Mental Health Centre, Northwick Park Hospital.
Eastlake ward is an 18-bed adults inpatient ward in Harrow Mental health unit. It has two adult wards, Fernley Ward and Eastlake Ward, predominately for working-age adults in mental health crisis and requiring acute hospital admission.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, energetic and passionate about delivering high quality care to patients acute and chronic psychiatric conditions, ensuring that assessment of interventions are provided in a sensitive, accessible and culturally appropriate way.
Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of obtaining the CCT and Approved Clinician Status

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be expected to lead on, in partnership with the modern matron, quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation projects and will be encouraged to undertake any research and audit that may be relevant, to either short or long-term service improvement.
Together with the ward manager, the post-holder will provide overall clinical leadership for the ward multidisciplinary team as well as direct clinical assessments, consultations, risk assessments and care plans.
Other duties include:
• Attendance at daily huddles and weekly bed flow meetings
• Clinical supervision of trainees and specialty doctors working with the team
• Responsible Clinician duties
• Regular clinical liaison with community mental health teams
• Regular liaison with families and carers
• Regular liaison with other stakeholders as appropriate eg Mental Health Act Law, Social Care, Advocacy, Metropolitan Police
Working for our organisation
The CNWL Harrow Mental Health Centre is a separate unit based on the Northwick Park Hospital Site in Harrow. It has 2 adult mixed gender inpatient wards, Fernley ward has 21 beds and Eastlake has 19 beds. The plan is to reduce both adult wards to 18 beds by October 2020. For Eastlake ward, the bed occupancy is 100%, with an average length of stay currently is 14 days and 48% of patients are detained. The inpatient unit caters for people who need an acute admission to hospital following a mental health crisis
The Mental Health unit also has a 24 bed unit older adults in-patient, serving Brent and Harrow, Ellington ward, the Home Treatment Team, the Psychiatric liaison team and the Harrow management team. It also houses the ECT suit which serves the wider trust, Perinatal and CAMHS ED community services for the Borough and Health Psychology.
As a new consultant in the team you will be offered a place on the Management and Leadership Course run by the Trust, in conjunction with Imperial College. The Trust also has a partnership with the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI), giving you the opportunity to gain knowledge in improvement science and enhance your skills and confidence to understand healthcare systems and successfully implement change.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Clinical Duties of Post-Holder
• Management of patients in the 19 beds, ward reviews/Care Programme Approach/tribunals and work related to the Mental Health Act.
• Management of complex cases
• Clinical leadership of team.
• Role in assessment of referrals/admissions.
• Care plan and treatment formulation within the trauma informed famework, guidance on evidence-based treatment and effectiveness.
• Liaison and collaborative working with other services/agencies.
• Mental Health Act implementation.
• Multi-disciplinary, multi-agency and partnership working
• Ensure that physical health needs are addressed
• Review and monitoring of the caseload to ensure appropriate care packages are put in place and discharges facilitated to maintain patient flow
• Following the cross-cover protocol that has been agreed with another team or colleague which will make sure appropriate cover is in place during absences.
General duties
• To manage, appraise and provide professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Trust’s personnel, policies and procedures.
• To ensure that junior medical staff working with the post holder, operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
• To undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
• To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively, and submit this promptly through the trusts clinical information systems.
• To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and, as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
• To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
• To attend and participate in the academic program of the Trust, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD program.
• To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act Section 12(2) approval, and to abide by professional codes of conduct.
• To work with local managers and professional colleagues in ensuring the efficient running of services, and share with consultant colleagues in the medical contribution to management.
• To comply with the Trust’s agreed policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions, and to take an active role in the financial management of the service and support the medical director and other managers in preparing plans for services
• To be flexible and willing to undertake differing duties according to the needs of the service, including representing the service at the Directorate strategic meetings.
• May also be required to provide cover for Specialty Doctors in emergencies. Arranging Locum cover will cater for planned leave cover for the Speciality Doctor.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Primary Medical Degree and Full GMC Registration
- • MRCPsych (or equivalent)
- • Section 12 MHA Approved
- • AC approval
- • Inclusion on the Specialist Register (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date)
Desirable criteria
- • Higher degree (MSc, LLM, MD or PhD)
- • Management and leadership training.
- • Management qualification and/or extensive knowledge and expertise acquired through training and experience up to doctoral level.
General Knowledge, Experience and Core Skills
Essential criteria
- • Experience of assessment and treatment of mental disorders (functional and organic) in an acute psychiatric setting.
- • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams
- • Experience of CPA approach and partnership working with colleagues in Health (Primary & Secondary), Social Care and Voluntary Services.
- • Proficient in risk assessment and management.
- • Experience and Training in Health Service Management
- • IT skills
- • Evidence of completed clinical audit projects
- • Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate trainee teaching
Desirable criteria
- • Postgraduate experience in General Practice/General Medicine Experience of service development/business planning
