Job overview
The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Specialty Doctor in Virology to join our dynamic and supportive team. This is an exceptional opportunity for a doctor with a strong interest in clinical virology to work in a leading NHS trust, contributing significantly to the diagnosis, management, and prevention of viral infections. The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality patient care and support the development and delivery of virology services across the trust.
Main duties of the job
Key responsibilities will include active participation in clinical services such as virology test authorisation, managing complex clinical inquiries, and providing expert advice on clinical management, infection prevention, and control. The role also involves participation in multi-disciplinary meetings and collaboration with consultants and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for patients.
The successful applicant will also participate in the Royal Free Hospital Virology out-of-hours on-call rota at a frequency of 1 in 4, ensuring robust and responsive virology support across the Trust. There will be opportunities to contribute to the development and enhancement of virology services, including involvement in quality improvement projects, service audits, and the support of training and education within the department, such as mentoring junior medical staff and other healthcare professionals.

Education & professional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Full GMC registration with a license to practice.
- Completed Foundation Year 1 and Year 2 training or equivalent.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development and commitment to continuing medical education
Desirable criteria
- Postgraduate qualification in Virology, Infectious Diseases, or Microbiology (e.g., FRCPath, MRCP, MSc).
- Additional training or certification in relevant areas, such as infection control or public health.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Minimum of 4 years of postgraduate training (or equivalent) with at least 2 years in relevant specialties, including experience in virology, infectious diseases, or microbiology
- Demonstrable experience in diagnosing and managing viral infections.
- Experience in working within a multidisciplinary team in a healthcare setting.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in research or audit within virology or a related field, with evidence of publications or presentations.
- Experience working within the NHS or a similar healthcare system.
