Job overview

The Urology department at the Royal Free London is looking to host a Senior Clinical Fellow in Masculinising Genital Gender Affirmation Surgery.
The post will be based principally at New Victoria Hospital, Surrey with occasional general urological on call and monthly Andrology clinic at Royal Free Hospital, London.

The post will allow the trainee to contribute to the care of transgender and gender diverse individuals. The trainee would receive exposure to outpatient clinics, conduct gender affirming operations at New Victoria Hospital under senior supervision, attend MDTs, undertake ward rounds and engage in audit and research under the direction of the consultant team. The candidate will be exposed to all aspects of masculinising surgery of the genitals including microsurgical phalloplasty and metoidioplasty.

The post is suitable for candidates who hold the FRCS (Urol) examination or equivalent, who may be pre- post- or peri-CCT and require subspecialty training in gender affirmation surgery.

The closing date for application is Wednesday 31 July 2024 and interviews are expected to take place within 6 weeks of this date.

Main duties of the job

For a 1-year fellowship for a urology trainee, there will be an expectation to concentrate on stage 2 surgery as above and stage 3 prosthetics surgery. Exposure to flap preparation and microsurgical vascular anastomoses is required, to enable to post-holder to assist a plastics microsurgeon in future. For a full 2-year fellowship, a urology trainee would be fully trained in flap elevation and microsurgery as well. The Urology trainee will be expected to attend the Royal Free Hospital for monthly Andrology clinics and will participate in the “Registrar of the Week” on call rota (one week/quarter).

The Senior Clinical Fellow will be expected to attend surgery sessions under consultant supervision and will also have exposure to outpatient clinics. The post-holder will be expected to attend the regular MDT meetings. and present clinical data at the regular Morbidity and Mortality meetings. They would be expected to complete at least one audit project and publish one paper  per year. They would be expected to attend national/international meetings to present research. 

This is the first UK post of its kind as it provides training in the full spectrum of NHS commissioned masculinising genital gender affirming surgical care.

The post is appropriate for an individual that requires sub-speciality training in masculinising genital gender affirmation surgery.
