Band 8a Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner - Camden Pain service

Fixed term contract until 31st March 2026

We are pleased to advertise this Pain Management Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner (APP) post working within the multi-disciplinary Camden Pain service based at the Royal Free Hampstead. This is an exciting opportunity to for an APP with extensive experience in Pain management to work within our team including Psychologists, Consultants in Pain management, Physiotherapists and Therapy assistants.

We are looking for someone with excellent knowledge of treating individuals with complex pain and who ideally has an independent prescribing qualification.  The successful candidate will work closely with the Clinical lead physiotherapist and the Clinical lead medical consultant to provide triage and first contact APP clinics for the Camden Pain service. The best candidates will have leadership skills and will be able to support the Clinical leads in further developing the service.  This post will also carry a physiotherapy caseload.

  • • BSc Degree/Diploma in Physiotherapy
  • • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration
  • • Postgraduate training or development in clinical skills up to MSc level or equivalent with a focus in pain or musculoskeletal physiotherapy
  • • Evidence or portfolio of post-graduate continued development relevant to pain management

  • • Independent prescriber qualification
  • • Postgraduate training or development in management and leadership skills
  • • Membership of specialist interest group

Experience

  • • Substantial postgraduate experience in the pain management field, including experience working as an APP in an MDT pain service
  • • Advanced knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of patients with a wide variety of conditions including complex chronic pain conditions
  • • Experience of cognitive behavioural approaches to pain
  • • Experience of delivering group work
  • • Experience in managing highly distressed patients in group and individual settings
  • • Experience of supervising senior qualified staff
  • • Experience of teaching to uni-disciplinary/ multidisciplinary groups
  • • Evidence of service development & contribution to change within the workplace
  • • Experience of working alone, managing own time and using excellent organisational skills

Skills and aptitudes

  • • Highly specialist knowledge within the pain and musculoskeletal field and ability to apply this in a clinical setting
  • • Knowledge of recent developments in the profession
  • • To be competent in the decision-making process and ordering of any investigations necessary to reach a diagnosis or decide on the appropriate management of the patient’s condition e.g. x-rays, MRI, blood tests, EMGs, ultrasound, listing for surgery in line with protocols and guidelines. This will require highly advanced clinical reasoning and highly developed problem solving and analytical skills and is beyond the normal scope of physiotherapy practice.
  • • Skills in critical analysis and the application of research to practice
  • • Excellent communication / interpersonal skills both written and verbal
  • • To manage stressful situations by remaining calm, objective and professional at all times
  • • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills
  • • Able to carry out concurrent activities (multi-tasking) and work in an unpredictable working pattern
  • • Ability to take a lead role in service development, liaising closely with the MDT to promote clinical excellence
  • • Excellent leadership skills and proven clinical leadership ability
  • • Competent IT skills including use o internet, email and word processing
  • • Excellent presentation skills
  • • Demonstrate an understanding of NHS reforms and policies and their impact on the service
