Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant post in Infection at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust for six to nine months to cover parental leave.

Ideal for those with CCTs or equivalent in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, or in Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, or Infectious Diseases and General Medicine.

The candidate will work 10 PAs, including on-call commitments.

Job plan includes:

  • Clinical microbiology service
  • Infectious diseases inpatient service
  • Bone Infection service at Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore
  • Chronic infection service
  • Renal and liver unit liaison roles
  • Outpatient antimicrobial service
  • Tuberculosis service
  • On-call microbiology and/or infectious diseases service
  • Educational and clinical supervision of junior doctors

This post is within the Department of Microbiology, part of the Infection and Associated Specialties Clinical Service Line, including Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Virology, and HIV medicine, with strong links to Immunology.

This is an exciting opportunity for a consultant trained in Infection to gain experience in a large, forward-thinking department. The microbiology department has nine consultants, four also in Infectious Diseases. The Department of Infectious Diseases has 11 consultants, including four joint ID/micro. The post is funded for 10 PAs, including on-call supplement, providing Clinical microbiology and infectious diseases services at the Royal Free Hospital, Hampstead site.

Main duties of the job

Infectious diseases services are based at the Royal Free Hospital. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to the ward-based service, the tuberculosis service, clinical supervision of trainees, and teaching of medical students.

Clinical microbiology services at the Royal Free Hospital site include daily intensive care unit ward rounds, proactive and reactive advice for patients with acute infections, clinical supervision of trainees, oversight of new laboratory results and authorisation, and teaching of medical students. Additionally, successful applicants will have opportunities to contribute to the chronic infection inpatient consultation service, chronic infection outpatient clinic service, outpatient antimicrobial treatment (OPAT) service, renal infection services, antimicrobial stewardship service, and infection prevention and control service (IPC) at the Royal Free Hospital site.

The clinical microbiology laboratory oversight at the HSL laboratory includes oversight of new laboratory results for the Royal Free Hospital and The Doctors Laboratory (TDL), results authorisation, and responding to clinical enquiries from the Trust and TDL clients. The successful applicant will have opportunities to contribute to this service, as well as laboratory service development and laboratory governance.

Fourteen infection trainees rotate through the department, providing on-call services under consultant supervision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applicants must be fully registered with the GMC and hold License to Practice, and be on the Specialist Register for Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, or Infectious Diseases and General Medicine, or be within six months of attaining CCT or equivalent at the interview stage. Applications are welcome from candidates who may want to work part time.

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent
  • Membership of Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • CCT or equivalent in Microbiology, Infectious Diseases & Microbiology, or Infectious Diseases & General Internal Medicine.
Desirable criteria
  • Masters in appropriate training
  • PhD in appropriate training2
