Job overview

Due to restructuring our children's speech and language therapy team has 2 full time, part time or job-share band 6 posts available for enthusiastic, innovative therapists who would love to become part of our well-established team. Working in our schools and clinics you will have the opportunity to develop specialist skills depending on your interests - autism, dysfluency, complex needs and deafness. 

This role would be suitable for an experienced band 5 therapist wanting to develop skills and progress to a band 6 pending meeting competencies. Apply if you feel you can develop specialisms in any of these areas.

This post is eligible for the Trust 'Welcome to NELFT' payment, a lump sum of 10% of agreed basic salary excluding HCAS and is open to all new applicants who are successfully appointed. Payment of the incentive is 50% of the lump sum at the end of the probationary period (typically six months) and then 50% at the end of year two. This welcome package is applicable to external candidates only.

Main duties of the job

This post will be based in  clinics in Thurrock and working across Brentwood and Basildon as part of a team providing a service for children presenting with communication disorders 

  • As a successful candidate you will have a recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree and HCPC registration
  • You  will assess, diagnose and provide therapy interventions to children with developmental language disorders and specific speech disorders in clinics and schools and pre schools
  • You will  develop the skills of colleagues to support communication development through providing training.
  • You will organise, plan and prioritise your own work load, and that of assistant staff and demonstrate the ability to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management.
  • You will have excellent interpersonal skills – including observation, listening and empathy skills, to enable you to work to support the individual needs of the schools, staff and pupils.

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop in sessions focusing in engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Devise and deliver appropriate specialist intervention / care plans / enhanced models of SLT for children s with delays and disorders of communication, speech and language and provide suitable and timely support.

2. To independently manage and make differential diagnoses for a caseload of children with delays and disorders of communication, speech and language. This includes children with/without an Educational  Needs or Education, Health and Care Plan
3. To provide specialist knowledge, advice, training and teaching to parents, carers, students and SLT team in all aspects of management of speech, language and communication delays and disorders in children
4. Work as part of the integrated therapies multi-disciplinary team ensuring the delivery of joined up care plans. 
5. Contribute to multidisciplinary support for clients with a range of speech, language and communication difficulties.
6. Provide oral and written feedback, advice and training to parents/family members, carers and members of the multidisciplinary team regarding communication needs and strategies to facilitate development.
7. Develop and deliver training and support packages

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • HCPC Licence to Practice
Desirable criteria
  • Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience working with clients who have a range of speech, language and communication needs in community and mainstream settings
  • Experience of working in a multi-agency and/or multi-disciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience / knowledge of early intervention approaches and low tech AAC
  • Experience providing training to education and health colleagues and parents and families

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Able to construct clear care plans, including assessment for differential diagnosis, providing therapy from a range of options based on analysis of information from assessment using evidence base
  • Knowledge of a range of appropriate assessments for the differential diagnosis of developmental language disorder and specific speech sound disorders

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Effective communication / interpersonal skills (written, verbal and listening)
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to formulate care plans identifying functional goals and outcomes in multidisciplinary discussion
  • Able to demonstrate clear clinical reasoning based on evidence based practice
