Job overview

We are looking for a friendly, flexible and highly motivated individual to join our team.

The post holder will have operational responsibility for the delivery of the Newborn Hearing Screening Programme cross site.  They will be expected to team build, organise others in their actions and set priorities, objectives and goals within the sphere of responsibility and in accordance with National and Local guidelines.

Main duties of the job

You will have  operational responsibility for the day-to-day management of the newborn hearing screening team at both sites ensuring high quality standards are maintained throughout and any onward referral to local paediatric audiology teams.  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required in addition to a methodical and well organised approach.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Service Delivery Responsibilities

  • To act as the professional lead for the day to day management, evaluation and quality assurance of the screening process including the provision of antenatal information, the screening procedures and any onward referral.
  • To report and record all incidents or ‘near misses’ as per Trust Policy including taking appropriate follow-up action as agreed with Programme Manager.
  • To ensure all parents of eligible babies are offered the Newborn Hearing Screen in a timely fashion.
  • To ensure the hearing screening programme is carried out as per national and local protocols.
  •  To promote the principles of a ‘family – friendly’ service by ensuring that parents and carers are given clear and accurate information regarding the hearing screening programme at all times.
  • Problem-solve day-to-day management issues organising and reallocating work where situations change due to variations to the work load and staffing availability.
  • To identify opportunities for service redesign, focusing on a family-centred approach to delivery; contribute to plans which improve and develop services
  • To establish and maintain effective methods of communication to ensure that screening outcomes are delivered correctly to the parents, primary care teams, other Newborn Hearing Screening Teams where appropriate and Audiology Services where follow-up is indicated.
  •  To assist the Programme Manager in service planning and development of the service and to ensure it is responsive to internal and external pressures / demands whilst delivering high quality services and national targets within NHSP.
  •  Responsible for the design and implementation of audits in collaboration with the Programme Manager reviewing target and quality delivery of the services across both sites. 

  • To investigate complaints, as delegated by the Programme Manager in line with Trust Policy. This may involve handling sensitive interpersonal situation.
  • To deputise for the Programme Manager as and when required to ensure effective business continuity arrangements are in place.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • To identify and prioritise babies requiring a screen within the maternity unit, NICU / SCBU, private wing and outpatient clinics following national and local protocols; over a 7 day service to ensure maximum coverage of births including weekends and Bank Holidays 
  • To demonstrate a high level of competence in screening practice.
  • To communicate effectively with parents regarding the screening process, liaising with interpreting services where necessary. 
  • To ensure all administrative and clinical information including test results are accurately recorded on the record sheets, the screening equipment databases and in the S4H database.
  • To carry out Transfer in and out and share of records on NHSP data base Smart4Hearing (S4H).
  • To organise workload to ensure maximum number of inpatient babies receive a hearing screen by working flexibly where necessary.
  • To answer any concerns parents may have prior to the screen being undertaken and communicate results in a sensitive and timely manner.
  • To effectively and professionally communicate with other screeners and members of the team as well as other colleagues on the maternity unit and in the community.
  • To ensure multi-disciplinary liaison regarding appropriateness and timing of the hearing screen.
  • To ensure appropriate and timely referrals are made to Paediatric Audiology Services via the NHSP administration team.
  • To maintain confidentiality of the babies and their families at all times.
  • To assess stock availability in clinical areas: patient literature, screening consumables and equipment and make sure that the working environment is clean and tidy.
  • To ensure the safety and security of equipment at all times and to report immediately any equipment faults to the Programme Manager
  • To ensure equipment is safe, clean, set up, checked and documentation made daily according to local protocols

Staff Management

  •          To assist the Programme Manager with managing staff leave, sickness, appraisals, competency assessments and training / orientation of any new recruits.
  • Create and manage NHSP rota cross site;  anticipating staff shortages and problem areas acting to minimise the impact of these on service delivery
  • Set objectives for staff, identifying individual training and development needs and promote continued personal and professional development.
  • Ensure all staff comply with relevant Trust policies and standing financial instructions as delegated by the Programme Manager.
  • Support conflict resolution from patients, staff, suppliers, other internal and external service providers and partner organisations in the service.
  • Ensure that all staff adhere to the appropriate legislation when dealing with patient material and that suitable filing and booking systems are effectively managed.
  • Support the monitoring of compliance with internal and external governance and best practice requirements with the administration service.
  • Effectively communicate with a multi-disciplinary group of people, demonstrating interpersonal skills when dealing with all levels of staff across the Trust, using persuasion, tact and reassurance where necessary.
  • Influence, motivate and involve individuals and teams within the service to achieve necessary performance targets.
  • Deal with telephone calls related to the service, ensuring that customers are communicated with in a sensitive and effective manner and problems are dealt with promptly and efficiently.
  • To ensure the screening staff follow best practice with regards to Health and Safety, Information Governance and security.

Research and Development Responsibilities

  • To assist the Programme Manager in the implementation of upgrades and developments of the national database including the evaluation of new screening devices across the Trust’s hospital sites, creating training plans and delivering relevant training to all users.
  • To carry out administrative functions and regular data quality checks including failsafe as per NHSP service Local Task Management Tool.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent professional qualification or relevant experience
  • Management qualification or proven equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) Clinical Competence Workshop with associated Observed Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) / External Competency Assessment (ECA)
Desirable criteria
  • Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement or working towards gaining qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working as a Newborn Hearing Screener or Senior Screener
  • Experience in the delivery of NHSP Education and Training
  • Effective time management with an ability to prioritise workloads
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of mentorship, supervision and co-ordination of staff
