We also provide some specialist services that are commissioned regionally, such as our medium secure services; and nationally, such as the Cassel Hospital for people with complex and severe personality disorder and our high secure services at Broadmoor Hospital.

 

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 8a Highly Specialist CAMH Occupational Therapist to join the West London CAMHS Tri-borough Alliance Service.

We are looking to appoint a Highly Specialist CAMH Occupational Therapist who will participate in delivering provision of specialist mental health services to children and young people and their families and carers across the West London NHS Trust 3 Boroughs CAMH Service and crisis pathway, who present in crisis to CAMH Services, hospitals and sites covered by the Alliance Crisis Care Team.

The post holder will join a thriving team of supportive, committed and skilled clinicians who are dedicated to changing the future outcomes for children and young people who present to mental health services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as an autonomous clinician to provide accessible, high-quality mental health assessment and intervention (including risk assessment and the development of risk management plans) for children and young people that is sensitive to their cultural, ethnic, religious, contextual, family and developmental needs. 

The post holder will also provide brief interventions and outreach work to children and young people presenting with acute psychological and mental health problems where intensive support is required to prevent admission to Tier 4 services and to facilitate safe and timely discharges.

 

The post holder will offer specialist advice and consultation to other professionals across a range of agencies. They will also provide support, clinical supervision and teaching of staff and students.

They will also contribute to the leadership and development of the team and they will have the opportunity to be involved in service development, audit, research and QI projects.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) or equivalent Occupational Therapy qualification with additional therapeutic qualifications
  • This should be supplemented by other specialist training and short courses.
  • Current professional registration: HCPC
  • Evidence of accredited courses in child and adolescent mental health practice
  • First or higher degree in appropriate subject area or equivalent post registration training and experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant management training/ qualification
  • Relevant post graduate qualification in Mental Health related field
  • Qualifications/ training in specialist skills e.g. systemic therapies, CBT, Family Intervention. Evidence based group work e.g. DBT

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience of assessment and working therapeutically with children, adolescents and their families.
  • Demonstrable experience of assessment and working therapeutically within a range of mental health settings.
  • Experience of the use of Occupational Therapy models of practise, standardised assessments and outcome measures.
  • Experience of working in a number of ways i.e. assertive outreach, clinic based settings, home, school or other appropriate environments.
  • Experience of interagency and multidisciplinary working
  • Experience of assessing risk and formulating safe and effective risk management plans
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision / line management.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching other professionals
  • Qualification/experience of using sensory integration as a therapeutic modality.
  • Experience of management of child protection emergencies
  • Experience of therapeutic work with children and families where abuse or neglect has occurred

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of legislation relevant to the Children’s Act 2004, Mental Health Act 1983 & Safeguarding Guidelines
  • A sound working knowledge and application of relevant professional code, i.e. professional Code of Practice – RCOT
  • Knowledge of the legal issues relating to consent and capacity in children and young people.
  • An awareness and understanding of the issues facing, children, adolescents and their families
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Skills in communicating with children, adolescents and their families or carers
