Permanent, Full Time (10PAs)

We are inviting applicants to join our vibrant and enthusiastic team as a Consultant Community Paediatrician in Ealing, London.

The roles will cover general Child Development Team duties, with several specialist interest options available for clinics and lead roles, which can be agreed with the clinical lead.  

Specialist community paediatric services in Ealing are based in Carmelita House, the home of Ealing Services for Children with Additional Needs (ESCAN). This is a joint Health / Local Authority venture and is one of the few in the country to host specialist community children’s services, children’s mental health services, Education and children with disabilities social work team within one building and one managerial entity.

Ealing is a vibrant, bustling residential suburb of West London. It is the largest borough in North West London.

Clinics are also run at other locations across Ealing, and in specialist schools and nurseries. Within ESCAN, the Child Development Service includes: Community Paediatricians, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy services, community nursing services, special school nurses, clinical nurse specialists, looked after children health team, paediatric audiology, and safeguarding children team.

The team has a strong commitment to training and personal development, so the post holder will be expected to participate in the teaching and training of all professional groups within the Child Health Service. 
Currently the team also contributes to the hospital paediatric Grand rounds and epilepsy meetings, the neuro-disability meetings at GOSH and the bi-monthly joint teaching with Brent community paediatrics.

Post holder will participate in these as their SPA sessions allow, and contribute to audit activity and the clinical governance work of the specialty of Community Paediatrics.

The post has been advertised as 10 programmed activities though applicants wishing to work more flexibly or job share are also encouraged to apply.

You will always be part of a dynamic and experienced community paediatric team of paediatricians with an excellent skill mix who provide a full range of community paediatric services. The team currently comprises of 5 Consultants, 1 Physician Associate and a clinical Nurse Specialist.  We also have access to Epilepsy Nurse Specialist based at Northwick Park Hospital.

• Participate in general Child Development Team clinics in a variety of locations across the borough
• Participate in EHCP assessments 
• Participate in child protection work, including supervision of middle grades, direct delivery of service if middle grade is not available, report writing or supervision, and possible case conference attendance
• Provision of educational and clinical supervision to departmental trainees. Post holder may also be required to act in a supervisory manner to non-consultant grades in areas not covered by these job plans.  

In addition, there are specialist clinics and lead roles available. These can be discussed and agreed with the post-holder, but may include:
• Provision of school medical service at Mandeville Primary schoolfor children with PMLD / complex health needs
• Participating in the Social Communication and Autism (SoCA) assessment service
• Participating in the MultiDisciplinary Assessment clinics for children with complex physical needs and/or Down Syndrome. 
• Provision of palliative care in partnership with local community nursing team and tertiary palliative care teams. 
• Lead Consultant for SEND
• Lead Consultant for SoCA team
• Lead Consultant for Neurodisability (inc Down Syndrome)
• Lead Consultant for Transition
• Lead Consultant for Education and Training

Qualifications & Registration

  • MRCP, MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • On the GMC specialist register or within 6 months of CCT or CESR-CP in Paediatrics

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD etc)
  • CCT or equivalent in sub speciality of Community Child Health

Experience

  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams within community settings
  • Has achieved the competencies relating to General Paediatric Training
  • 5 years Higher Specialist Training, including 3 years in Community Paediatrics
  • Training and experience in identification and management of suspected child abuse
  • Completed minimum Level 3 Child Protection training within last 3 years

  • Experience in other areas relevant to child health e.g. general practice, child mental health, obstetrics, public health

Knowledge and skills

Academic / Teaching

  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff
  • Up to date with annual appraisals and revalidation requirements. Ethos of lifelong learning and a desire to continually gain and improve knowledge and skills

  • Evidence of on-going interest and achievement in research
  • Training in research methodology.
  • Publications in peer review journals
  • Presentations to learned societies.
  • Presentations at National or International meetings.

Management and Audit

  • Understanding of management issues including medical management; clinical governance, service planning
  • Understanding the principles of clinical governance and its implications
  • Understanding and experience of audit
  • Understanding of NHS systems and audit processes

  • Have led and completed audits that have led to demonstrable service improvements.
