The Acute Care Unit provides patients admitted to hospital with safe and compassionate care during the first 48 hours of their admission. We aim to support our colleagues and collaborate with other specialities for the good of our patients. The ACU team works closely with the Emergency Department, ambulatory care (HAMU), primary care, and the full range of specialties based in the hospital. They also provide out of hours cover to adult inpatients. We strive to maintain a mutually supportive and collaborative dynamic with the Emergency Department.
The Acute Care Unit works as a team, and all team members are expected to help colleagues if they are short staffed, or unusually busy. This includes, in certain cases, seeing patients in A&E before they have been seen by the A&E team if they are likely to require medical admission. Please be flexible and accommodating with all the MDT members, and do not hesitate to ask a colleague for help.
a. Defoe role
The role will be based within the medical team on the Defoe ward (a general medical ward).
It is a 3- month fixed term contract. You will be part of the Acute Care team to provides patients admitted to hospital with safe and compassionate care during the first 48 hours of their admission.
Working hours on Defoe ward are 8am to 4pm. There are no out of hours work associated with the role.

Person specification
Education & Higher qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS / MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
- Full GMC registration
- Permission to work in the UK (i.e. appropriate visa and/or work permit)
- Evidence of successful completion of Foundation year 1 & 2 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of completion of CMT or equivalent
- MRCP Part 1
- MRCEM part A (or equivalent)
- FRCPath Part 1
- Other related qualifications: e.g. Diploma in Medical Microbiology, MSc in Microbiology, Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- At least 6 months experience in General or Acute Medicine at FY2 level including participation in unselected take
- Experience of General Surgical specialities, including participation in unselected take, at FY1 or equivalent level
- Clinical Knowledge and expertise: appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgements to problems
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice
Desirable criteria
- 6 months experience at ST (IMT) 1 and above
- Experience of Microbiology & Infection or clinical specialties where there is a significant component of infection e.g. ITU/HDU
- Experience of laboratory work (including research) relevant to medical microbiology
- Experience of Emergency medicine, Acute Medicine or Ambulatory Care.
- 2 years clinical NHS experience
Skills and abilities
Essential criteria
- Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively
- Good organisational skills e.g. organise ward rounds
- Ability to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions, indicating an analytical/scientific approach
- Competent IT skills including Word & experience of using hospital computer systems (e.g. EPR, PACS, order communication system etc.)
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience using WinPath IT systems
- Relevant procedural skills
