Job overview

The Lewisham and Addictions Directorate is recruiting to the post of Service Manager, for Neighbourhood 1 community operational services for a 6 month secondment. 

This will include Primary Care and longer term Community Mental Health Teams based in Speedwell Mental Health Team in the North of the Borough. 

The Neighbourhood 1 Service manager will also hold senior operational responsibility for the Lewisham Low Intensity team, Lewisham Physical health team and other stand alone practitioners in the borough i.e. MHP in the PCN and Dual Diagnosis and homeless outreach practitioner.

Main duties of the job

  • Provision of leadership to The Neighbourhood 1 teams in conjunction with the ‘lead’ consultant and Team Manager to co-ordinate, develop and manage the service’s strategic and operational plans.
  • Management of the clinical teams to ensure integrated clinical, operational, quality and financial outcomes are achieved within the service line.
  • Joint accountability with the lead clinician to ensure good throughput management utilising demand and capacity information.
  • Exercising systematic clinical governance of their professional practice and that of the team
  • Active engagement in continuing professional development, including use of management & clinical supervision
  • Ensuring access to adequate and robust supervision for staff in the service
  • Provision of specialist components of the service by coordinating and planning, considering the training, skill mix and experience of the team alongside the leadership team

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Leadership & Management of people 

The service manager is accountable for people management and development across their services. They will ensure people are focused and efficient in their roles and are achieving in individual and service KPIs. Robust performance and attendance management will be fundamental to ensuring service objectives are achieved and problem areas identified at an early stage with solutions quickly implemented.

Key Performing Indicators

  • Through coaching and feedback, drives a performance achieving culture ensuring people are carrying out their roles to the highest possible standard and that they understand the key measures for success
  • Ensures structures are in place so the teams are aware of and can pursue the aims, objectives and overall strategy of the service, thereby contributing to the overall development of clinical services provided within the psychotherapy department.
  • Ensures timely and reliable recruitment decisions and ensures effective management of staff induction and ongoing supervision for all staff, ensuring formal appraisal carried out in line with trust policy. Identifies staff training & development needs and liaises with trust & external training resources to meet these, ensuring provision of specialist teaching and training while promoting continuing professional development
  • Provides guidance and support to team members in meeting individual and team objectives through structured performance management processes, seeking advice from human resources and applying Trust Policy as needed.
  • Takes responsibility for coordinating input of sessional & temporary staff in services.
  • Undertakes teaching/training activities within the trust

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised Professional Qualification in Social Work (DipSW/CQSW), Mental Health Nursing (RMN), Psychology or any allied medical profession
  • Bachelor’s degree (in relevant discipline) or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Masters level education (in relevant discipline) or equivalent experience
  • Post-graduate qualification in Healthcare Management/Business Studies
  • A commitment to Quality Improvement and/or QI training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of leading, and co-ordinating complex multidisciplinary clinical services
  • Experience of change management and workforce redesign to deliver organisational goals
  • Experience of managing budgets and resources effectively
  • Experience of performance management of service delivery, staff and processes to ensure local and national targets are consistently achieved
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Project Management
  • Experience of leading business planning processes and delivering targets within an agreed budget

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Specialist clinical knowledge relevant to the service, including evidence based practice/research methodology
  • Knowledge of performance management methods/procedures, supervision and appraisals
  • Understanding of the legislative and quality frameworks that govern provision of mental health and social care.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Leadership skills especially the ability to lead and manage change through influence without direct management
  • Able to work collaboratively with professional leads and quality and to ensure safe and effective practice
  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills and proven ability to evaluate services and present findings to stakeholders
  • Able to lead and generate a clear sense of direction for the service and its employees
  • Able to set objective measurements and develop monitoring systems to inform the organisation
