Job overview

To provide antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to women and babies during their pregnancy, birth and aftercare.

You will be based in the community setting and will have the opportunity to practice all of your midwifery skills. We currently operate both a traditional community midwifery service as well as team based Continuity of Care (CoC) models.

To meet the needs of the women we serve you will also need to cover the homebirth on-call service, we have opportunities for being involved in Pan London working , involvement in projects across East London’s Local Maternity System (LMS) in relation to maternity transformation,  great opportunities for partnership working particularly with our Children’s and Maternity Safeguarding teams. You will need to be confident in working alone and as part of a supportive community midwifery team

We are keen on talent management and professional development at BHRUT, so you will be actively encouraged to develop your career with access to further training opportunities such as Examination of the Newborn. As a new starter to the Trust you will have an individualised orientation programme designed to support and guide you in your first weeks, you will be supported to attend training and education programmes, alongside access to aspiring Band 7-8a/b/d development packages, and you will receive ongoing support from our fabulous in house Education Team and senior midwifery team.

Main duties of the job

Are you a dynamic, passionate and innovative midwife? Do you want to be in charge of your own caseload and run your own clinics? Are you inspired to support low risk women to birth in their own home?
If you can answer yes to any or all of the above, we would like to talk to you as we are currently recruiting Community Midwives.
BHRUT is one of the most forward thinking Maternity units in London and Essex, servicing a hugely diverse population across a large geographical area. We are the second largest single site maternity service in the UK, meaning that brings you both midwifery and wider opportunities that other Trusts simply cannot.
With a total of 12 geographically based midwifery teams providing a full range of antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care (alongside specialist midwifery care), we are a large workforce looking after a diverse population. We are looking soon to expand the number of teams currently offering intrapartum care as part of our Better Births and maternity transformational plans.

Working for our organisation

We’re an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24; we’re no longer in special measures; and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we’re proud of and that our patients are happy with.
Many of our 8,000 staff – who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we’re proud to be a London Living Wage employer.
We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023.
Patients across north east London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George’s Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.
We’re looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It’ll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.
