An exciting and unique opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, dynamic and self-motivated professional to join our clinical trials team at the Chelsea site of the Royal Marsden.
You will be part of a team consisting of Pharmacists, Technicians and Assistants, who are always striving for excellence in all aspects of our work. We are working collaboratively as part of a Multi-Disciplinary Team to ensure we always deliver outstanding care to our patients.
It is an exciting time to join the Royal Marsden Hospital Clinical Trials Department. Our service is built around providing a high-quality service to our patients and staff of the Trust. The department works closely with the Institute of Cancer Research and the post-holder will be supporting the development of innovative new cancer medicines as these drugs enter early phase clinical trials. The Oak Cancer Centre (a new, state-of-the-art treatment and research facility) opened in 2023 in Sutton which will speed up the translation of world-leading research into breakthroughs in treatment and care, transforming the lives of cancer patients at The Royal Marsden and beyond.
The hospital introduced the EPIC digital health record system in March 2023, and we are looking to use the full capabilities of this system to become a truly paperless department.
Main duties of the job
The Job Description outlines the roles of the Deputy Chief Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Trials. You will work closely with the Chief Technician to directly supervise and manage staff to co-ordinate the daily running of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials GCP service and the Clinical Trial dispensary. Ensuring a prompt, safe, efficient and accurate Pharmacy Clinical Trials GCP service and Clinical Trial dispensing service is provided at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
2.1 To directly supervise and manage staff to co-ordinate the daily running of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials GCP service and the Clinical Trial dispensary.
2.2 To ensure a prompt, safe, efficient and accurate Pharmacy Clinical Trials GCP service and Clinical Trial dispensing service is provided at all times.
2.3 To support the Clinical Trials Operations Manager, Chief Technician, Clinical Trials and Deputy Chief Technicians at the other site to ensure a consistent service across the two sites.
2.4 Co-ordinate and deliver training for all staff working in the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Team ensuring they conduct duties within legislations and local procedures/policies
2.5 To assist the Chief /Deputy Chief Technician, Aseptic Services, through training and monitoring staff in the aseptic preparation of Clinical Trials.
2.6 To deputise for the Chief Technician, Clinical Trials in their absence
2.7 Participate with all activities within the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Team

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered pharmacy technician with GPhC
- Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) or must be willing to work towards achieving qualification.
Desirable criteria
- Practice supervisor/Educational supervisor certificate / Train the Trainer or equivalent
- Leadership training or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant clinical trial work experience (post qualification) in hospital pharmacy
- Knowledge and understanding of the principles of Good Clinical Practice
- Staff supervisory experience as a senior technician
- Experience of training staff
Desirable criteria
- Experience in aseptic preparation
- Experience of managing staff, including sickness, performance, conduct and appraisal process
- Experience of leading or organising a service on a day-to–day basis
- Experience of change management
- Experience in writing Standard Operating Procedures for new processes
- Experience in handling systemic anticancer treatments and safe handling requirements of cytotoxic drugs
- Oncology Pharmacy experience

- Proficient in Pharmacy stock control and dispensing computer systems
- Ability to deal with conflict/difficult situations.
- Calm under pressure maintaining accuracy and attention to detail for prolonged periods of time with frequent and unpredictable interruptions.

- Experience of working with EPIC
