Job overview

The award-winning Urology Diagnostic Team at RMH has an international reputation for high quality patient care, education and research.

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Urology Nurse to join our dynamic nurse-led service as a Diagnostic Nurse Specialist (Band 7)  
The successful applicant will work with the diagnostic team to provide support, education and advice to patients throughout their diagnostic pathway through to treatment. They will also run the support and information program for patients on active surveillance for low-intermediate risk prostate cancer.
You should have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in Urology. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and a professional manner, be able to prioritise and organise your workload and work under pressure.

Main duties of the job

  • The CNS will use communication skills in all aspects of patient assessment, care and support.
  • To act as a key worker for a clinical caseload incorporating the responsibilities of the key worker role, working to coordinate care and provide easy and timely access for ongoing support for patients under the guidance of the senior diagnostic team.
  • To undertake in-depth discussions about the patients’ particular diagnosis, all treatment options, including research based treatments with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise to enable patients to make an informed choice.

  • To work to the Nursing and Midwifery Code: Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics for nurses and midwives and relevant NMC guidelines.

Person specification

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse with active NMC registration
  • First level degree in related subject or prepared to work towards this
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Be willing to undertake Trust CNS role development programme or be able to demonstrate equivalent competencies
  • Experience of working in Urology (minimum 2 years)
Desirable criteria
  • Research qualification
  • Level 2 psychological skills training as per recognised course or working towards
  • Advanced Communications Skills Training or working towards
  • Post-basic qualification in cancer/palliative care or relevant subject

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post registration experience, at Band 5 or above, in urology, cancer or palliative care
  • Experience of multiprofessional working
  • Experience of Audit
  • Experience of Urodynamic studies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching
  • Experience of research
  • Leadership and management experience
  • Able to conduct reflective practice and participates in clinical supervision facilitated by a level 3 / 4 practitioner
