Principal Physicist

We are looking for an enthusiastic physicist with considerable experience to join the Diagnostic Radiology Physics team at The Royal Marsden Hospital in a permanent position.

The post holder will act as a Medical Physics Expert in Diagnostic Radiology, procuring, accepting, commissioning and optimising x-ray and CT equipment, and contributing to routine quality control testing, patient dosimetry and radiation protection services.

The Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a tertiary centre for cancer treatment and together with the Institute of Cancer Research forms the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe.  The Department of Physics provides clinical services to the Trust and undertakes extensive basic and translational research. The Diagnostic Radiology Physics Group provide diagnostic radiology physics and radiation protection services to The Royal Marsden and to other hospitals. The Royal Marsden has sites in Chelsea, Sutton and Marylebone. The group is a friendly team and consists of 7.2 WTE scientists, a senior healthcare science practitioner and a senior radiology review coordinator, and we are based at the Cheslea site. We encourage all staff to participate in the Group's research and development activities and its extensive teaching and training commitments.

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

  • Act as operational lead for one aspect of the diagnostic radiology physics group’s service, such as the X-ray equipment quality assurance programme, patient dose audit programme, or radiation protection programme, as required for the efficient delivery of the service.
  • Serve as Medical Physics expert for diagnostic radiology according to the requirements of the Ionising Radiations (Medical Exposures) Regulations 2017 (IR(ME)R).  The post holder will operate with considerable personal autonomy.
  • Participate at a senior level of professional expertise in the provision and development of the group’s diagnostic radiology physics service.

  • Interpret, communicate and discuss test results, as appropriate, with the manufacturers’ representatives and clinical staff.
  • Produce technical specifications for complex, patient-critical radiology equipment prior to purchase.  To conduct technical evaluations of the tender responses and advise the Trust on the technical merit of the equipment offered by manufacturers, and on equipment selection.  This work requires analysis of interpretation of highly complex technical data, often associated with novel imaging technology.
  • Develop and document quality assurance methodology and procedures.
  • Select quality assurance test equipment and to calibrate such equipment as required.
  • Provide radiological physics advice and assurance to radiology staff.

Education/Qualifications

  • Good (1st or 2nd class) Honours degree in physics or other related subject.
  • MSc in Medical Physics [or equivalent].
  • HCPC registration as a clinical scientist.

  • Certified medical physics expert (i.e. on RPA 2000 list of existing MPEs or certificated through the RPA 2000 MPE scheme) in the Diagnostic Radiology field
  • PhD in relevant subject (or equivalent).
  • Corporate membership of an appropriate professional body

Experience

  • Relevant and structured training and significant consolidated experience across the range of working procedures and practices in diagnostic radiology physics.
  • Sufficient structured training and significant experience to act as a Medical Physics Expert under IR(ME)R within the field of Radiology.
  • Demonstrable contributions to the development or applications of medical physics. Suitable research and development experience in other areas might also be considered acceptable
  • Substantial experience of using PCs. Able to use Excel to develop custom spreadsheets with macros for data analysis.
  • Experience of using image acquisition and image reviewing workstations for image manipulation and analysis. Experience of using computers in a networked and PACS environment.
  • Experience in programming using image processing software such as Python or IDL
  • Experience of supervising other staff.
  • Current evidence of Continuing Professional Development
