Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant
Job overview
We are delighted to introduce you to the Plastic Surgery department at the Royal Marsden which is at the forefront of reconstructive surgery for cancers patients both nationally and internationally. Specialising in microvascular surgery, yet covering all aspects of reconstruction, the department has evolved from a long-standing single consultant practice to a multi-consultant independent surgical unit that provides expertise and services to patients from a range of tumour groups across the Trust. The largest proportion of reconstructive work at the Trust is undertaken on patients who have received treatment for breast cancer and there is a bi-weekly joint Oncoplastic multidisciplinary meeting to discuss these patients.
Main duties of the job
This is a full-time substantive Consultant Plastic Surgeon post. The aim is to provide long term stability and succession planning for the department and to provide the right candidate with the opportunity to develop both their own career and the care given to patients. The post holder will have a key role in enabling the Trust to maintain performance within national waiting time targets for delayed reconstruction and to meet patient choice around immediate reconstruction at the time of surgery for cancer. The post is predominantly based at the Sutton site providing both breast reconstruction (Autologous immediate and delayed DIEP breast reconstruction and Risk Reduction reconstruction) and skin cancer management and including Melanoma and Sentinel Node biopsy at Sutton. There will be access to an operating list in Chelsea once per month for breast reconstruction and there will be also be commitment to provide Gynae reconstruction once per month in Chelsea.
Working for our organisation
The Royal Marsden is a world leader in cancer research, treatment and education. Together with our academic partner, The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), we are the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe and the only National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre specialising in cancer in the UK.
Our mission is to continue to make a national and international contribution to cancer research and treatment, so that more people are cured and quality of life is improved for those with cancer. The Royal Marsden therefore plays an important role in championing change and improvement in cancer care through research and innovation, education and leading-edge treatment.
We have a reputation for delivering high quality performance. We were ranked joint first in the CQC national inpatient survey results, above average in national cancer patient experience survey and ranked first amongst teaching hospitals in the UK for our staff survey results.
Predominantly the Trust’s workload is from within the South West and West London Cancer Networks but, as a specialist cancer, the Trust has a high out-of-area referral rate for rare cancers, recurrent disease and treatment-related problems including international referrals. The Trust operates a shared care model with St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust for paediatric cancer.
