Biological Specimens Coordinator, Band 4/5 (depending on experience), Sarcoma Unit, Chelsea.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated Biological Specimen Coordinator to join the Sarcoma Research Unit. You will be involved in the organisation and collection of tissue specimens for phase I to III clinical trials in different modalities including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work within the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Trust (RMHNHST) and occasionally liaising with the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) Tissue Collection Facility and be responsible, in conjunction with the unit support for biological specimen co-ordination involving collecting, cataloguing and processing clinical samples (usually tumour and blood specimens) belonging to the Sarcoma Clinical Trials Unit, supporting the unit based in Chelsea with occasional travel to Sutton using the trust’s internal shuttle service.
The job involves working as an integral part of a busy research department, collecting patient samples for ongoing studies. This will include collection of old and new tissue samples, processing and labeling samples, managing the collection of samples and storing samples in the appropriate conditions (eg. fridges and freezers at -70oC). This role will also involve being an integral part of the recruitment of patient into translational research studies. The post holder will be trained in consenting for translational studies and actively involved in identifying potential participants and gaining consent for them to participation in the study.

- To ensure the timely and efficient collection of samples
- To ensure accurate labeling of samples
- To ensure that the work is carried out in line with Standard Operational Procedures and Departmental and National Policies (The Human Tissue Act)
- To freeze tissue at -70oC or in liquid nitrogen
- To process tissue and blood samples as required eg. Separating plasma and cells
- To send samples, sometimes using dry ice as requested via external courier services
- To work semi-independently at a number of sites to ensure timely collection of samples for use by the research team.
- To liaise with scientists and clinicians between the RMHNHST and the ICR
- To liaise closely and coordinate tissue collection and data collection with the Clinical Research Nurses, the Histopathology departments of the RMNHST and the ICR and other members of Dr. Robin Jones, Prof. Winette van der Graaf research teams
- To communicate effectively with members of the team and other organizations.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Biomedical Science degree or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Participation in a recognised CPD scheme
- Technical qualification in pathology/histopathology
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable laboratory experience in the techniques listed in the job description
- Generic laboratory and histology expertise and knowledge
- Experience of database management
- Ability to work independently in accordance with policies and procedures and use initiative

- Good level of English Language demonstrated through effective written and excellent verbal communication skills
