Clinical Specialist (Social Worker)

NHS AfC: Band 6

North London Mental Health Partnership includes Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust (BEH) and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust (C&I).

Together, our two trusts employ around 6,000 staff and support almost a quarter of a million adults and children with mental health conditions. We are a forward-thinking, innovative organisation, committed to delivering  the very best care possible.

We provide a wide range of mental health specialist services, including children and young people’s mental health services, prison services, forensic services, eating disorders and drug and alcohol recovery. We also support the UK Armed forces community, including members of the Reserve Forces, providing specialist veteran services across London.

Both our trusts are rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission, with many areas judged to be Outstanding.

We proactively welcome diversity in our workforce and pride ourselves on being an inclusive employer.  We aim to recruit from our local communities and provide Apprenticeship opportunities as well as employment opportunities for care-leavers.

Why choose to join the Partnership?

  • We are a great place to work for our staff with occupational health services, wellbeing initiatives and staff incentives.
  • We offer flexible working,
  • Our staff are eligible for the NHS Pension Scheme and receive a generous annual leave allowance.
  • Discounts are offered to NHS staff in a wide range of stores and services
  • We have excellent internal staff network support groups
  • We support learning and personal development opportunities.
We have been working together in a Partnership between Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust and Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust for some time, with a single Chair and Chief Executive since 2021 and single Executive Team since 2022. We launched our North London Mental Health Partnership Strategy in May 2023 and in July 2023 our Boards agreed that coming together to create one new Trust is best for our service users, our staff and our local communities. Subject to final approvals, we will be formally established as one new Trust on 1 October 2024.

The C&I Early Intervention Service is in the process of an exciting expansion.

Our ambition is to be a Gold Standard Service, faithful to the EIP model, capable of having a real impact on relapse rates, inpatient admissions and service user recovery in terms of social inclusion, maximising strengths and potential. The successful post holder will act as care coordinator for a caseload of service users under CPA whilst contributing to the wider multi-disciplinary team approach from within their area of expertise in social work. Owing to the planned expansion, it is hoped the post holder will be free to dedicate time to occasional stand-alone profession-specific  work on behalf of the wider team, according to need.

This post will ideally suit a social worker  with experience of supporting individuals (and their families) with a psychotic illness in a community setting. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their leadership skills, supervise junior staff and will deputise for the Team Manager at times.

The Islington Early Intervention Service is an innovative and forward-thinking team working with service users experiencing a First Episode of Psychosis (FEP).

Islington EIS is a well-established, multi-disciplinary team serving a culturally diverse London Borough. The team promotes a full symptomatic and social recovery, with an emphasis on assisting service users into valued education and occupation. The team also has a strong research ethic, with the team participating in several multi-Centre studies.

The service aims are:

  • To offer early assessment, diagnosis and treatment of FEP.

    • To offer person centred, individual, culturally sensitive care, with an emphasis on increasing stability, skill development and developing social roles.

    • To maximize both symptomatic and social recovery after a first episode of psychosis through effective engagement with service users.

    • To minimize the service user’s first experiences of service contact being disconcerting or stigmatizing.

    • To support and educate carers, and involve them as fully as possible in service users’ care.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge base of health and psycho-social interventions for first episode psychosis clients. This post would suit applicants with prior experience in mental health wishing to develop their skills in a community setting. Team members benefit from a supportive team environment, with clinical supervision, peer support and training including the Early Intervention training programme. There is also the opportunity to contribute to the development and evaluation of a group programme for service users.
